I am infuriated about my game day experience

Last night at the game I was embarrassed. I was infuriated. I was sickened to see what has happened at the University of Tennessee but not because of how our team played or even the outcome of the game last night. Don't get me wrong I hated seeing what happened on the field and how we played but I am talking about what happened in Section II, Row 8, Seat 23. This was my seat that I paid for. This is where a friend and I stood up, cheered, and screamed for our Volunteers.

This is also were we, along with two other fans sitting next to us, were standing up and cheering for our Vols on Defense at the end of the first quarter on where Bama was driving and they scored a touchdown right at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. At this point we were told by a middle aged couple sitting a few rows behind us to sit down because they, I quote "had paid for their seats and they could not see." It was not the fans directly behind us. We responded to the couple and apologized but said that we were not doing anything wrong, we had also paid for our seats, and that we wanted to stand up and cheer for our team.

A few minutes later, two Ushers, who are representatives of the university, came down to us and told us, I quote "Sit down and shut up or we will throw you out." When we questioned the ushers about why we were asked to sit we were then cursed and told, I quote "If you do not sit your ass in the seat we will get the police and throw you A**holes out!"We were not drunk, belligerent, or cursing. We were cheering for our Defense. After talking to the ushers for several minutes and at the urges of others around us, my friend and I reluctantly sat down but the two other fans sitting next to us were escorted out into the breezeway by the ushers where they were spoken to by police officers. About 15 minutes later they were allowed to return to their seats; however, we were instructed that we could not stand up unless something, as the ushers and police officer described, "good happened." Later we asked for the usher's names and they would not give them to us. Their name tags had been turned around to where we could not see their names.

I am writing this thread because this is ridiculous. This is a blatant violation of our right to enjoy the game. No where on the ticket does it say that we must sit down in our seat during the game or that we may not stand up for the entire game if we wanted to. I am infuriated that ushers, as university representatives, would treat us with such disrespect by cursing us and threatening us for only supporting and cheering for the Vols. We all pay for the ticket to get into Neyland and for the ushers to tell me that I am going to be thrown out of the game because I am standing is offensive to me as a passionate fan.

If anyone who reads this thread works for the University of Tennessee Athletic Dept. you will be receiving a formal complaint from me about this situation. To all others who read this thread, I know this is long but it needs to be said. Whether you want to stand or sit, do not impede upon the right of other fans to stand or sit if they want to.

I'm sorry, but that's when somebody's gettin punched.

Wow, this is not the Tennessee football I grew up with... I grew up believing that my involvement in the game as a fan in the stadium could literally sway the outcome of the game. (Yeah, I still think that) On a crucial 3rd down the entire stadium would standing, screaming, jumping up and down, waving pom poms, banging on anything metal, etc. It was so loud that audible calls were completely impossible and false start penalties on the other team were typical. THAT'S the way Neyland should be. And if you don't want that kind of "game day experience", stay home and watch from your recliner (heck, you get the added bonus of drinking your beer while you watch the game and true fans get the added bonus of not having to deal with your pathetic lack-of-energy bringing our team down)

What about the disrespect you showed the middle aged couple that wanted to sit down to where they could rest and watch the game? See, it works both ways.:eek:k:

When you go to see a football game in person, you are well aware of the atmosphere. If you want to sit and watch a game without being bothered, don't go to the game. Watch it on tv.

this, there's a reason the players motion for us to stand up and get louder.

All it takes is one person to complain and you could get escorted out. It has happened to me twice. Once for the same reason as the OP has stated that someone behind me could not see over me and I was taken out in the concourse by the cops. I was let back in after a few minutes. Another time a Florida fan turned and said something to me and I let him have it verbally, so he went and told on me to the ushers. The ushers told me to calm down and everyone around me just laughed including several Florida fans.

You can sit at home a watch the game. I find it pathetic that these "fans" find in necessary to harass people when they are cheering. I agree with the others and they would have had to throw me out, especially at the point when they decided to curse at me. I am not one for forced confrontation but it makes me sick that these.... never mind I'll stop there. Short version is I agree with you.

How can we be the "12th man" if we can't even stand up and make some deafening noise??? Ultimately, the stadium ushers handled this situation completely wrong. First of all they SHOULD NEVER have been using profanity to deal with these fans. Second, they should have explained to both parties that each should try and be considerate of the fans around them but that the bottom line is that IT IS A FOOTBALL GAME!!! My understanding is that the "middle aged couple" that complained.. left in the beginning of the 3rd quarter even after these gentlemen sat down... My advice to that couple is - STAY HOME NEXT TIME... WE DON'T NEED YOUR KIND OF NEGATIVITY IN NEYLAND STADIUM!!!

Do you really think the story happened exactly as the OP presented it? There are always two stories and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. And you can always make noise while sitting down.

There are too many 1st person accounts of this same thing happening for this not to be probable.
You are louder when you scream standing than sitting.

You can make more noise when you are standing, because your body is not bent, like it is when you are seating, and thus constraining the movement of your lungs.
When the noise is really high (when we are on defense), it can cause false starts for our opponents, so... it does help a little bit.

Actually, I do believe him because I was there... And yes, you can make noise while sitting down but while we expect the guys on the field to give their all for 60 mins.... I think that the least I can do is stand up and wave my orange and white shaker on 3rd down! How spoiled and lazy have we become?

It's not about being lazy. I'm a stander. But I also make an effort to be respectful of those around me.

Well if they dont wanna stand and cheer for there team on defense then they should take their ass home.

well, sorry about that...when I called the ushers I didn't think that they were going to curse at you. I thought they would just tell you to sit down. Sorry about that

Really?

These guys were not being disrespectful. They weren't being obnoxious... They were cheering for the Defense! Hey, how 'bout we ask the team.... They might feel that the OP was just trying to show THE TEAM some respect.... don't know - just a thought

welcome to VN, post often

why do you think our player on defense ask us to make noise by moving their arms up and down?
And you really can make more noise standing, simple physics, your lungs can expand a lot more while standing.

Well sir....you have to look at this from both sides. You and a few others decided to stand....the majority decided to sit. You gave no quarter....so you were asked to sit and think about standing when "good stuff" happened.

Seems like a resonable request....makes the game an enjoyable event for you and the "middle aged" folks who are fans... like you.

Calm down and think about the situation from those sitting behind you....can you see merit to anything they said to you?

The ushers spoke to you most likely in a manner that is not acceptable....but I will bet, they got your attention, as it seems like you wanted to call the shots last night in section II, row 8, seat 23.

I agree with this 100 per cent!

I hope you were there to witness this incident.

Also, is there a button located in every humans butt that when pressed by sitting prevents the human from making noise? If this button exists, I will apologize.
