I Am Hearing That A Defensive Coach May Not Be Returning

I would say that a strong OC would prefer to know who some of the other coaches around him were going to be, and would also like some input in those decisions. If he knows who his guy is now, that may have been something already discussed, but this all speculation. My favorite part of the VN, by the by.........:)

He said like 2 days ago that CPF is going to the convention. You are believing him one way or the other.

He also gave the heads up about the interviews CPF gave in Tampa. Noone has been very accurate about this situation, but he has given out more correct info than anyone else.

fwiw, the articles i've read about fulmer going to Cali came through an AP article (no author given).... I guess Hubbs could've written or been the source for those, but I doubt it.

It does seem interesting that Slade is going but not speaking. Other posters seem to think that he is going to look for a job and that Chief can help him out. I'll believe it when I see it, though. What say you ViA?

CPF has an idea of who he wants for the other positions. He just wants the OC to be comfortable with the choices.

Well, believe what you want, bill. What will you say if CPF doesn't go?

Take it for a grain of salt, because this entire process has seemed very awkward to me, very weird. But I believe Slade will be with Tennessee in the 2008 season.

the only reason slade leaves is retirement. He's not getting canned after how Berry performed, turning Vinson around that fast and his relationship with CPF.

of course, I'm not VIA.

I don't think he is gone either. It just seems off. I really don't want Slade to have the chance to digress this corps, though. It could be one of the best defensive backfields in UT history, imo.

I truly believe if Cutcliffe stayed (this Roper and Luke staying), then Slade would have been gone.

True, CPF really doesn't want to deal with a damn near complete overhaul.

On the other hand, I really think he could pull Walton and wouldn't even have to conduct a search. That would be an upgrade in coaching and recruiting. It would potentially hurt with some current recruits at the moment. It would really help in the long run, though.

that's why i was asking you. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing. I'm just saying Hubbs has looked like an idiot with all his predictions and expectations these past few weeks. I'm not automatically believing anything he says at this point.

Say what you want about Troop, but he was "that" guy on the recruiting trail. Anyones name being thrown around out there to be "that'' guy? At the end of the day, I understand that CPF is still one of the best closers in the biz, but seems like we're lacking that go getter type.

I wish UT would take a look at Mike Van Diest in Montana. I know he coaches in the NAIA, but his team has won the national championship 5 times in the last 6 years and were recently on the cover of SI. He is a very nice guy too.

Hubbs hasn't really predicted anything and he's admitted many times that this has been one of the harder scoops he's had to work for and that CPF is being as tight-lipped as ever.

I've read hubbs saying spence, marrone and kippy. Kippy several times. Saying they were close to locks. Hours later, he's changing his tune.

That just goes to show how close to the vest Phil has made this search. Nobody at all has any idea of what's going on.

The perfect replacement for Slade, Deon Grant, is still several years away from hanging up his cleats in the nfl.

Slade's not going anywhere. Why go to the convention and rep Tennessee only to come home and be out of a job??? Not going to happen.

He's not speaking at the convention, rex. Maybe you didn't read the posts. Alot of coaches go to the convention to look for a job. It isn't an uncommon practice. I don't think it's gonna happen, though.

I agree, ViA. I think it would be nice to bring in Walton and let J have a GA position under him with the DBs.
