Sometimes I envision Butch is piloted by an alien that learned earth lingo from self help tapes.

Brick by Brick: A guide to building your self confidence.

Snap and Clear: The handbook for untapping your true potential.

Power of One: You are your own best advocate

Very Very Good: You are if you believe it.
tell it to the kids in the locker room not to the guys/fans that cant slap that sign even if they dreamed it.

fans are not just vfl only..

Sounds like Scientology. Butch may be either a clear or an Operating Thetan. Doubt he's progressed any further than that on a measley 3.6 mil a year.

So he should just be classless and come out and say something like this then, "well people lets tell it like it is, North Texas really stinks. I mean they are terrible. Any team that gets blown out by Portland State should just shut down their program. We are not concerned with them at all and their coach is just way out of his league coming to Neyland. So lets not talk about North Texas High School and talk about the Mizzou game."

Yes thats exactly how I would want Butch to act.

At one point, he actually said "It's been a tough year for grass."

Haha...heard that. He also said he'd spoken to 10 headcoaches yesterday morning....presser was early, at 10 eastern. Is it possible that that's true? 10?....group chat?

I would like any of you to be forced to publicly speak for hours a week about a game. Throw in the fact that reporters try to play gotcha and I bet each and every one of you develop coach speak before you get through one week. 12 hopefully 13 data points in a year...there is only so many ways to slice it.

I absolutely despise how the media tries to sensationalize EVERYTHING...like watching paint dry and/or grass grow. So it gives me great pleasure when CBJ rattles off one of his coach speak phrases. And I absolutely LOVE that our football players are adapting some of CBJ's habits. :p

GBO!!!

Saw this tidbit on GoVols247.

Article: Vols Looking to Minimize Distractions

This is the most obvious example of "coach-speak" I've ever seen, but then he makes a point to say it's not "coach-speak." And I f@#$ing love it!

Coach Jones has an almost superhuman ability to stay relentlessly positive, focused, and on-message. It's why he's one of the best motivators in the game. I know there are so many people here at VN that hate the "coach-speak", but to me, that's part of why Butch is so great. You can't get him off message. You can't get him to "look ahead." He's going to make sure that those players know that North Texas is the most important game this year! And next Sunday, Missouri will be the most important game this year!

No, he is just trying to make sure all the numbnuts believe that these teams are national title contenders in case he blows another game.

Part of what makes Butch so great? How can you say "so great" at this point? Isnt the jury still out? His recorded is slightly above.500 at this point. And he's literally blown significant leads in 5 games in one season man (although we did end up winning the sc game). Name another coach that's ever done that. Horrible at clock management, horrible at managing time outs, and horrible at keeping the foot on the gas.
It's like he's hypnotized a portion of the fan base. People in our fan base are walking around with Butch please shirts on and quoting his clichés. Yet the national media substitute his name for being an idiot. Seriously....there have been multiple articles where the author says some other coach channels his inner Butch jones
Let's give it a season or two before we start discussing what makes his such a "great" coach

I don't like the coach speak any more than most fans. But, what do you expect him to say? His job is to keep the players motivated and focused. His job is to get butts in the seats and persuade recruits to sign on the dotted line.

Should he tell the media that his team sucks--even if they do? Should he say we are going to beat the brakes off the next opponent--even if he knows we will? Should he reveal all of the injuries and plays he will call before each game?

OK wise ones----what would you say if you were coach?

It won't matter what happens a season or two hence. You will still be pixxing and moaning about Butch. Blah-blah-blah.

Not true. I'm a fan that just wants to see our team win. I was big supporter in his first year and a half on the job. I loved the energy and recruiting. But we began to see very poor gameday management. As soon as we'd get a lead he'd go ultra conservative allowing every team many chances to get back in it. Then when they would catch back up to us, he's blame the players every single time. To me that's just the worst possible example of leadership. It's cowardly the way he manages the games and its cowardly to blame every else for everything. Butch hasn't one time taken any responsibility whatsoever for even one poor decision. And yet the national media all realize it's his decision making.
I do hope he changes because we lose half the roster every time we change coaches.

Who actually gives a crap? If you are being annoyed by "coach speak" then you must look at yourself and realize it's more about you then what is being said. You are the reason coach speak exist, because you hang on every word waiting for some kind of gotcha moment. So like this week when Butch got a little sensitive about some peoples' negative questions and went off script some people blew a fuse- because you thought he was over reacting to criticism but he's just being honest and said what was on his mind. You are the reason coaches aren't more honest because of if the coach said what he really thought of everything you would hate it even more, because he "wasn't being smart with his words" - coach speak is the result over reporting and extreme PC - and some people want to see this extend to most facets of life. Get over yourself.

Can't have adequate grass depth until its been in the program 6 - 7 years. Water discipline, eyes on the sky. Every day and every play is 63: 6 parts CO2 and 3 parts nitrogen - the key to championship grass. Our young grass is banged up but showing great resiliency this year and will be ready for North Texas.

I won't ever apologize for winning grass.

Not sure if you're talking to me.. I was asking an honest question. Never heard the term before in reference to football. Curious if anyone knew..

Understatement. I can't think of a tougher year for grass. Maybe '87. Maybe.

But the turf's shown tremendous resiliency all year long. Is a young playing surface, but it wants to be here. Give it time...It'll get there.

One of the better efforts during a tough stretch.

He's a cliche machine. I've just resigned myself to the fact that I'm not the target audience and I tune it out.

that's a good point.

if the goal for media interactions was to entertain, he'd ve an epic failure.

but, it's not, and i'm not a fan of the SOS coming out of his mouth either, but as a manager, manager of people for a long time, i do understand and respect the fact that he can remain so flippin' consistent in his communication.

we can debate the quality of that communication mind you, but it's a very difficult thing to do to remain consistent like he does. it has an impact on the players, and it's evident that they've bought in with the effort they play with.

and in the end, that's all that really matters. he's never going to be spurrier, beliema or dooley for that matter at a press conference or in an interview.
