Hypocritical, or not?

It isn't hypocritical if we're simply honest about the reasons for opposing Schiano's hire.

It is being generous to say that Schiano's connection to the Penn St scandal was flimsy. His name came up in second-hand hearsay testimony and wasn't even admissible in court. The reaction against him was so negative because we all had our hopes up for a home run hire, but instead got an obvious Haslam backdoor plant who wasn't even on anyone's list and likely would have been a horrible fit at Tennessee.

When people oppose Schiano, just be honest about it and say that Schiano was nowhere near a good enough candidate to overcome his baggage. If Gruden or some other big name had the same flimsy-at-best connection to Penn St, it would have been overlooked and/or excused ("It was all based on the word of one guy! It's hearsay!").

Freeze, on the other hand, is a good enough candidate to overcome his baggage.
