At the end of the day, only crazy people brought up the Penn State stuff. The majority of the fan base didn’t want Schiano because he’s a horrible coach and that has been proven right by two instances: his demotion to CO-DC and the fact he didn’t get the interim when Urban was out.

I actually question the sanity of the people who post that Schiano covered something up or allowed it to continue as the main reason for not wanting him. I hated the PSU scandal but it’s hard to say heresay testimony in court should be biggest disqualifying factor against him. His coaching record disqualified him enough.

This is simply not true. Yes, people didn't think he was a competent coach, but most people also didn't want someone tied to the Penn State scandal even more. You can search old Vol Nation threads if you want, or find old Twitter comments, or old news stories, or maybe even pull up archives of radio shows during that time to prove my point.

It was just an allegation, but even if there is the slightest chance that's true, nobody in their right mind would want that guy to be the face of our program.

disagree. you can agree he sucked as a coach but Schiano Sunday took place because of his association with PSU. Had this wedge not existed, we would be stuck with him and Currie as an AD right now. We would have simply sat back and said "well damn, Tennessee gonna Tennessee" and pressed on.

We knew Urban was an ass but I hadn't heard anything about the domestic violence cover up until this summer. Where you got that he was an awful human being prior to that I don't know.

When Urban Meyer made sure Chris Rainey was back on the team for rivalry games after he texted to the girl he beat up "Time to Die B-tch", that proved what kind of human being he was

When Urban Meyer let 29 guys on their 2 deep national championship teams play after being arrested...

When Urban Meyer ended Carlos Hyde's indefinite suspension for assaulting a female after his top 2 RBs got injured

When Urban Meyer did not punish Aaron Hernandez for multiple assaults, drug issues, etc....

Screwing hookers and cheating cheating your wife while being a holier than though douche isn't great. But it's no where close to the Penn State tragedy. I can handle Freeze if he helps us win

I’ll be happy when Schiano is never again mentioned in a TN discussion. Freeze doesn’t have to apologize to anyone other than his family. Apparently his wife stayed with him...

For those who are being held up by their moral compass... the game just changed.
Alabama’s OC is interviewing for the HC job there. If Hugh is cleared by the SEC to be employed, which it sounds as if he has, then would you rather us pick him or let Saban take him (which he tried last year)?

In other words does the morality cause mean enough to let Saban have him?

Let’s use common sense here. I read where someone said that people who look at Schiano and the PSU scandal is insane. Really?? Everyone on that staff knew what was going on, I don’t care what they say. Every member of the coaching staff at any school are always together. Anyone can lie in court to cover stuff up. It was child rape and since he knew about it, that made him just as guilty. No, I don’t want anyone like that around my kids, your kids or anyone else. That is common sense. Freeze on the other hand used prostitutes for gains so to speak. Everyone on that staff knew that. Yes it was wrong but it wasn’t child rape. Yes it would be hypocritical to hire Freeze but he has come forward with his guilt. Schiano is still lying to everyone about his. You are rewarded for truth. So Freeze would be a good hire. We could all solve this with the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury in my book though.

One hired prostitutes.
One, allegedly, allowed child rape to continue.
This is why we can't have nice things.

1) Yes, he was accused of calling an escort service on a state owned phone. Haven't seen where he hired any of them. He served his mandated NCAA penalty.
2) Schiano allegedly had knowledge of the Penn St issue and people bring this up as to why he shouldn't have been hired. He shouldn't have been hired because his record shows he sucks as a coach.

Better a hypocrite than a loser. We have been losers for a decade it’s time this moral superiority stopped.

I voted no. I think he would be the best OC for the job but no way can I support him. I didn't want Schiano for a coach because he was tangled up in bad situation not matter what his real part was.
Most on here cited their moral integrity as a reason why Petrino shouldn't receive an interview just last year.
Everyone wanting Freeze just wants to win and so do I but come on. A player was paid, hookers were called, and the guy was never upfront about anything. I remember him saying he dialed the wrong number when word got out. Freeze is as slimey has Petrino without a doubt.

Why would Volnation be okay with damning Schiano and Petrino from being here just to be thrilled with someone that lies with more recent baggage. Volnation... it is fickle and a preference driven minded place.

Has anyone else noticed that Freeze went 19-21 in SEC play during his time at Ole Miss? I mean... are we sure this is what we want anyways?

Freeze may have made a mistake or several, but that just proves that his moral compass doesn't exactly point to true north all the time. TBH, most coaches are the same in one way or the other as far as their moral compass. He got caught... that's the difference between Freeze and a great many high level coaches across college football. I think that he will be on a short leash and live under a microscope. CJP and CPF know that anything that Freeze does reflects on the Tennessee brand, and my best guess is that the mere appearance of inappropriate behavior will result in his unceremonial dismissal from the program. He may make another mistake, unlikely given the level of publicity that he received after his last indiscretions, but he wont be around long enough to hurt us too much if he does. I say give him the chance to redeem himself.

Exactly. My first reaction was, "Don't want anyone connected to that mess, and certainly not as the face of the program." Later I looked up the coaching record and his history as an all-around crappy guy to be around (as a coach, that is) and said, "Please, no."
I've been a lifelong Vol fan, and one of the reasons I've stayed so loyal is that we're NOT those other guys. My uncle was from Kentucky and used to tell me how great Adolph Rupp's teams were. He'd say, "They were so good they could beat you by however much they wanted to." Not once did he say, "We got caught cheating."
Never once have I wanted to be Kentucky... I wanted to beat them. Likewise, never once did I want to be Alabama... I wanted to beat them. Never once did I want us to be Urban Meyer... I wanted us beat him. Never once did I want us to be Pitino or Calipari... I wanted us to beat them.
To me Tennessee athletics looks like Pat Summit and Phil Fulmer. Above reproach. Any strong whiff of wrongdoing was dealt with quickly and severely. Right there with Fulmer was Cutcliffe.
So, to the subject at hand... while I think Freeze is overrated by most folks on this board -- and I've cited numbers for my reasoning elsewhere -- the reason I don't want him is that he's not only fallen far short of the established Tennessee standard but even of just basic decency.

There is a reason that Schiano wasn’t chosen as the interim HC for Ohio St at the beginning of the season but remains their DC. Big difference between being a coordinator and a head coach. I’d support Freeze as OC but not HC.
