Hymns

My church, sadly, has moved away from the old "congregationals" or hymnbook songs in favor of "choruses" and what I call gospel-lite. Not so sure that's a good thing. The other day a teenager sang Me and God. Since when was country music allowed in church?

Maybe it is a country church. We got a new hymnal a few years ago (Presbyterian) and our congregation hates it, so we still use the previous one a lot. I don't care for country style music in the service, but it's ok for other occasions.

"Just As I Am"

"Amazing Grace" (on bagpipes it's surreal)

"Elijah Rock" not a "hymn" per se, but a lot of fun when it's performed right

I would add Just AS I Am to my list

Amen to the bagpipes!

Just in case anyone cares to be a hymn, it must be based on scripture. Anything else is a religious song, or a secular song if nonreligious.

OMG, I swear I just now realized how that sounds.

I swear I didn't mean it like that. I was just using the "when it's done right" line from OE. Didn't mean it like that. Geez, I'm dumb. :banghead2:
Hey, man, I was just kidding around. I feel kind of bad for derailing the thread.

I grew up in the Baptist church, so all of the traditional Baptist hymns have a place in my heart. Some that I can recall (I am sure I am missing some).

Blessed Assurance
Softly and Tenderly
I'll Fly Away
When We All Get to Heaven
'Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus
Are You Washed in the Blood?
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Standing on the Promises
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
The Old Rugged Cross
How Great Thou Art
Amazing Grace
Victory in Jesus
Just As I Am
A Closer Walk With Thee

Truth be told, I did not pull most of this list from memory. Alan Jackson did a CD called Precious Memories that has most of these on it (plus a few more that did not really bring back so many memories). It is a really good CD of the hymns I grew up singing.

i know this is slightly off-topic but one of the things that i remember most about my great grandmother was a joke she told. she would laugh every time she told it, she also dipped snuff so she was incredibly awesome.
sure most of you all have heard it.

one sunday during service the choir leader is taking hymn request from the congregation. an old woman sitting in the back raises her hand and when he calls on her, she points to three guys up in the choir and says "i'll take him, him, and him."

i know it's cheesy but if you all could've seen her tell it...it was the funniest thing ever.

I can never keep a dry eye when The Pride plays Tennessee Waltz at the end of the season in Neyland. That count? No?... Amazing Grace then...

I had a Great Grandmother who dipped snuff, lived in a farmhouse with no electricity, wood cook stove, a well with just a bucket on a chain, washed clothes in a cast iron pot in the backyard where she also made lye soap, of course an outhouse, rain barrels, and a large garden, one or two hogs, a milk cow and two mules. An amazing lady with wonderful stories, and no one made a better biscuit then or now.

when you see an old lady dipping snuff...you know she's hardcore. my great grandmother had some hilarious stories also. i've been blessed that all of the women in my family(momma, grandmothers, and great grandmothers) have been incredible cooks.
