Hyams: oline if they had to play today

I agree we're kinda thin there. Coaches scrambling to keep it shored up. That's why I think there's zero chance we see Coleman Thomas back at C this season. He's our RT for the year.

Maybe.. Richmond is likely to take over RT before SEC play

Kerbyson
Kendrick
Crowder
Jones
Thomas

Roberson would take a spot if healthy.

Also first practice yesterday was cancelled for a fresher night scrimmage and to avoid injuries.

RB depth for legit contribution? Looks good in drills but need more live action to tell the tale.

Hinted that Dobbs was not great in practice but was a gamer.

Hyams on Khalil:

Will require 2 blockers. Staff trying to get him down to 330 he's well over 340.

Will need he and Tuttle by AR.

Will take a few games to get adjusted.

When teammates brag on you you know your good, teammates are bragging.

Phillips is really good will contribute a lot.

Vols have rabbit package with 4 DE's for passing downs.

Malone looks more comfortable.

More on Dobbs: Ceo has looked good.

On Dormady: Chance to be a really good QB. UT has talent at QB.
This the same hyams that works for kns.In 5 years have not read that many positives from him:)

He has not looked ready yet in practice. Still taking huge gulps from the fire hose. He's a great kid, but has a LOT to learn yet.

Thomas looked lost at T and then got hurt and did not play the rest of the season.... Richmond is a true T

Haven't we seen enough on Saturdays to allay this concern? I certainly have. Now he just needs to improve on his 63% completion rate by throwing a better deep ball, especially outside the hashes...already very accurate throwing the ball in the middle of the field as evidenced by last year. Most all reports are that he's improved his accuracy through spring and summer practice thus far.

It's difficult to assess. Hyams gave no specifics about his hint. We are speculating what it means. If Dobbs is still struggling with the deep ball, leading recievers, and touch passes, then the offense cannot fully use our weapons at WR. The offense is also easier for a defense to game plan against.

Can somebody help me out?

Has anyone seen or read any where in the local or national media concerning Dobbs, "no doubts now that Dobbs is going to hurt/stall our offense some with his inaccuracy. I've seen it for 2 years and with the reports I'm seeing so far this year, he hasn't improved much."

Dobbs is inaccurate and will hurt and stall the 2015 edition of the Vol football offense is reported where and by X? I must have missed that, could it have been at the bottom of a cup of sour grapes or something? I just don't get it, help me out, where is that being reported please?

I was watching the Alabama game replay on the SEC network this week. Dobbs made a great back shoulder throw to Malone for a TD. Then he made another throw behind the receiver who was wide open in the EZ from 10yards out. He has made some great throws, but his TD to interception ratio is horrible. Hopefully this season with more experience, more coaching, improved OL and more healthy targets, he can improve. Everyone has bad practice days so I wouldn't read too much into Hyams brilliant???????????? reporting.

I agree with this. He made some questionable throws last year. But so would most QB's that are being chased and had a depleted receiver corp. I hope we see a better line and healthy receivers. That should make his job somewhat easier.

Dobbs looked great in the Spring Game, that's all I remember.

Willis, one thing I noticed while compiling the starting OLines from 2008-2014 in that other thread, is that backup OLinemen don't play anywhere near as much as backups in other positions.

I mean, we rotate RBs and WRs out like interchangeable pieces in a Ford assembly line sometimes. We do the same with DLinemen when we can afford to.

But those 5 starting OLinemen, about the only way they ever come out of a game is if (1) the outcome is already decided (mop-up time) or (2) they get injured. Sometimes, they don't even come out for (2), heh.

So looking at the two-deep is important to be ready for injuries, but it's not gonna tell us a lot otherwise. It really is on the starting five.

Which makes the question of Jack Jones, Jashon Robertson, and Mack Crowder so compelling...how does that Center-Guard triangle play out over the next few weeks....

I think the rest of the OLine is set (Kerbyson-Kendrick-___-___-Thomas), it's just a question of those 2 spots and those 3 men.

Not rotating the OL as you do RB/WR is a given. But frankly from 08-14 our lack of talented depth prevented much rotation along the OL. Now that talent has improved I see Butch trying to get the #2s more PT/experience. It will be extremely hard NOT TO play some of the FR since guys like Blair and Mosley don't appear to be as talented.

Wait.

You mean to tell me an 18 year old in his first meaningful game on the road in Oklahoma playing OT with a background in only C looked lost?

I'm absolutely floored by this. Next up, we'll discuss why cars that are out of gas don't run.

And I do think if Jack Jones looks ready and plays well against BGU, he'll take RG and they'll continue to play Robertson at C.

Holy carp!

Man, I can not wait to see this package used. Barnett, Vereen, Phillips and Maggitt (or even better, Lewis for Maggitt, but Maggitt still on field at Sam) lined up and told to go find them a QB in less than 2 seconds. That'll be fun to watch. :good!:

Only down side is, would have to be REAL careful of the draw play...we'd be giving up a big weight differential to their linemen....

Gotta think Weatherd would be in there somewhere..... Probably the SAM in that situation

Until we get some big uglys on the offensive line I will always worry about it. There is nothing fierce about our oline or has there been for a while. If I am an opposing defensive lineman, I am thinking that I would eat these guys for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They just arent mean enough or bring any type of intimidation IMO

Hyams and all media are only allowed to see a small part of practice.
Would love to hear from someone who has seen a lot more of practice to give an assessment of Dobbs.

Just my opinion, but I think right now Robertson would take the RG spot simply because of Crowder's experience. Now if Jones shows that he's so good that he just can't be kept off the field that could change. CBJ seems to prefer veterans on the OL though.

Robertson was that guy last year. Jack Jones is, by accounts, that guy this year.

Before that, you're right. Even when we had a very good OL in 2012... nobody was mean.

Confusing is confusing.

Looks like someone is trying to cover their tracks about why Dobbs didn't start last year. Someone else mentioned this earlier, but the fact Dobbs got such rave reviews out of the Elite 11 camp should shut up all these he's not great at practice rumors. Many of the national media heads were saying he was the most impressive QB (along with JT Barrett) at the camp. And remember, this camp included the likes of Deshuan Watson and Christian Hackenburg.

Dobbs will be AMAZING this year. Just watch!

Hopefully they see the field together a lot this year. We need some guys that will put oppositions you know what in the dirt.
