Hurricane Irma

Cancelled my room with no problem. Should I call and cancel flights, or let them cancel due to weather? Because I highly doubt they're going to be flying IN TO Ft. Lauderdale early Sunday morning...

Cat 5 now! Will it hit south Florida? How many and how far north (including Space Coast) will have to evacuate? Some people in panic mode now. People buying water and flashlights/batteries like crazy. Some gas stations are 20-30 minute waits for gas. A little too early. Governor Scott has already put Florida in emergency situation. If it hits it won't be until late in the week (Sunday at latest). No need to evacuate until no earlier than 48-72 hours prior. Would probably head to the NW part of the state or into GA (I-75) if need be. Heading to the central part (Orlando) might not be too good if it comes across the state.

Hurricane Irma's damage could be the largest ever in the U.S., Barclays predicts

"Given the potential magnitude of this storm as well as the potential to impact a highly populated area, we think Irma's insured damage in Florida could be the largest ever in the U.S. perhaps equivalent to Hurricane Katrina," Barclays' Jay Gelb wrote Tuesday.

"In a worst case scenario, catastrophe modelers AIR Worldwide and Karen Clark and Co. have estimated a repeat of the 1926 Miami hurricane could result in $125-130 billion of insured damage,” Gelb added.

I'm just a tad north and east of Orlando. About 35 miles to the coast as the crow flies. Got reservations in Macon starting Saturday night, just in case. Worst case scenario is Irma stays north of Cuba and misses interaction with their mountains, then abruptly turns north and goes up the spine of the state.

The bad part about that is that it puts the east side of the storm over populated areas. SE Florida, i.e. Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, would see sustained winds of over 150 mph. Loss of life could be profound, not from flooding, though that could occur, but from homes and structures being torn apart.

Some models have it over Orlando as a Cat 4, which puts me on the east side of that, too. Charley Redux, only a lot stronger.

Even with a 48 hour advance evacuation, what's the chance of finding a place to stay in GA or Bama along I-75 about an hour north of the boder or even just north of Tallahassee? We're just south of Titusville.
We've been here almost 9 years. Moved here after Tropical Storm Fay hit in 2009.

Posting an update me and the wife were supposed to fly to Disney tomorrow. Disney has moved the reservation to the end of the month, Allegiant changed my tickets with no cost. Very happy and now I can quit worrying

Very poor. My parents have a room for first night, but they checked today to extend and cannot find anything along I-75, last I checked. Pretty much everything taken I guess.

You might be better off going west, like Tallahassee or Pensacola. Otherwise maybe Atlanta?

That Barclays comment could well be an understatement. A Cat 5 just inside the east coast of Florida, say by 30 to 50 miles, riding up to the cape or Jax, could easily be several hundreds of billions. Easily.

If you have refundable tickets, do it now. The airlines will wait until the last minute to cancel.

Stay safe!:good!:

I appreciate it. They keep talking on the weather channel about this thing going North at some point. Going to be very interesting to see when and where it turns and it has any impact on me personally. Best of luck to all the Florida people on here. This thing is a monster.
