Hurricane Florence

I don't know if they are in the eye but it seems relatively calm at the moment.

Edit: It may not be live now.
The flag is intact, so that isn't live. If the feed goes out I would imagine it reverts to stock footage or something? The left bottom corner says "highlights".

Yea, someone in the comments mentioned they'd changed the flag but then it clearly says highlights so I'm sure it's recorded. You can go back about three hours and it is definitely live then. Can't see anything but turn up the volume.

Yeah, definitely stock footage. I feel safe in saying that nobody went 40 miles out to a platform during a hurricane to change a flag.

maybe this guy

I'll bet they left the guy with the least tenure out there with some water wings and an umbrella and said good luck.
I have no real knowledge of those platforms but I've read where they're built to withstand storms much more powerful than that hurricane with relative comfort inside.

I was curious and did some research. The guy bought it for 85 thousand dollars and has really built it up. He actually rode out Hurricane Arthur a few years ago. It has since been sold, so I am not sure who the new owner is.

Wow... It never occurred to me that it might be privately owned.

storm surges being reported 10 feet in some places. I was surprised to read that they could last several days. another thing I didn't really think about is just the flooding from the rains, seems like a lot of the coast has already been hit by more than a foot. but with the wide area creeks and rivers will flood as well and last far longer than the storm.

Kevin the flag lives according to Frying Pan Tower co-owner Richard Neal. They plan to donate Kevin to the American Red Cross of Wilmington, NC to be auctioned off. Although the tower is 34 miles off the US coast it is 5 miles outside of the US so it can't be designated a national historic site. It's called Frying Pan tower because the shoals the tower sits on look like a frying pan handle. It houses 8 bedrooms and an inner crew room so it could sleep 12-15 people. He solely owned and ran it as a bed and breakfast for 7 years and earlier this year he decided he needed help maintaining it and partially sold it. In addition to the Frying Pan Ocean Cam on Youtube it also has an aquatic cam attached to it's base underwater.

The depth of the water below the tower is only about 35-40 feet.

The Weather Channel defending this is even more sad.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, the Weather Channel defended Seidel’s coverage, saying that he was standing on wet grass and was “undoubtedly exhausted.”

“It’s important to note that the two individuals in the background are walking on concrete, and Mike Seidel is trying to maintain his footing on wet grass, after reporting on-air until 1:00 a.m. ET this morning and is undoubtedly exhausted,” the network said.

He also works part time in advertising at the Honda dealership.

They shouldn’t have commented and let it .... blow over.
