Hurds Stepfather on concussion

The moms statement should have ended it. Everything else just makes them look bad

IMO that was the high point of this whole exercise by the young man and his family. It's gone back downhill fast and will probably roll lower. Hurd's a college junior so likely around 20 years of age and mom and step dad speaking for him. I was 20, overseas defending our nation, married with a child on the way. The idea my mommy and daddy needed to speak for me were years in the past. This young man needs to step up and be a man.

Yep. Butch, Jalen, Jalens mom and the team are all taking the high road. Message boards, the media and family are escalating this. Gonna be casualties on both sides. Baggage is baggage. Employers won't want to deal with it. Everyone should shut it down and stop poking the bear.

The comments section under that Facebook post are incredible reading. For instance, here's one:

"I do not post often. I have been a subscriber since 1999. I only bring info that I think that is useful to the board. I have this information indirectly but the source is one with direct knowledge of the entire situation from inside the program. Flame if you choose to flame. No big deal to me. That said everything here makes perfect sense and explains the past several weeks events with no exceptions. Here goes:

When Hurd fumbled at the goal line in the GA game, CBJ got in his face. He told Butch to f$ck off and then said that he was the team and that we would not win another game without him. Got benched of course. Kamara went in but later in the half was gassed and they tried to put Hurd back in but he refused. He eventually went in and scored on the pass before half. After that he came back to the sideline and said he was not going back in the game (to me this explains why he still had his hat at the end of the game. If he had a concussion, he would have had it taken away per protocol).

Next week he no showed practice M-W and came back Thursday (not injured as was reported). When he came back, Butch put it to the team to decide whether he would play. They voted that he could come back but should be suspended for the A&M game (thus he did not travel). Program put out that he was injured to cover that.

At USCjr he was not playing great and Kelly started getting reps and moving the ball. Hurd got PO'd and when Kelly got dinged up they called his number and he refused to go in the game. Carlin went in and then caused the fumble with Dobbs on that series. Dobbs got in Hurd's face on the sideline (not typical for Dobbs) about quitting on the team. He refused to play the rest of the game. Kept his helmet. Not injured.

Sunday night another team meeting to decide what the players wanted to do about him. Several called him out for quitting on the team and being selfish. He then walked out of the meeting. They then made up the transfer story to cover.

I have always admired Jalen for coming to UT and for playing very hard for us. He has helped this team win ballgames. I can forgive physical mistakes and mental mistakes. I could forgive the fumble even though it badly hurt the team. What I cannot forgive is refusing to go in when your team needs you. If this is all true, (and I see no reason to not believe this) we are much better off without him. We need talented players but we cannot afford to have players that are selfish to this degree."

sounds about right

This is just embarrassing, IMO. The mother made a classy post and that should have been the end of it. Now, you have his stepfather throwing shade at your old teams university ("could have gone anywhere other than a 4-8 team"). Just shut up and move on. It seems more to me that the step father just wanted his 15 minutes of fame, because until now, I have never even heard of this guy.

Jalen's stepfather was just on sporttalk in Chattanooga and I thought was very classy in what he said. He didn't put blame anywhere and said they all still have a very good relationship with Coach Jones and Coach G and that they didn't want Jalen to leave now, but support him now that he made the decision. its about as amicable as any break up can be and I think now everyone just need to move on. Jalen has done a lot for UT, and it should be recognized. But he is no longer a part of it. His teammates are moving on and we should all do the same.

Thw sad thing about all this is no matter what his parents say or do their son will go down in UT hisory as a quitter. Not the kid we all loved to watch football and a kid who almost broke the all time UT rushing record. Just a quitter. Part of being an adult is living with your decosions. Welcome to the real worl young man. Tell your parents to turn off the camera. Its not helping the situation.

A couple of things that are very telling from that rant:

1. All he seemed care about was a rumor that Jalen was benched. Did not refute telling Butch to F off, attitude, refusing to play, etc... He just wanted to make sure we all knew that there was NO WAY Jalen would get benched for Kamara and Kelly

2. Tennessee owes Jalen because we were 4-8 (not true) and he could have gone anywhere

Wonder where he got an inflated ego?

I thought Jalen's stepfather explained things very well.

Jalen's a grown man and he needs step daddy to explain things and you're cool with that? What's next your step father or father calling in representing you to your boss during evaluation and raise time, you cool with that?

So he was put under concussion protocol after the 3rd quarter "landing on his head incident", but allowed to play on the final kickoff??? BS. This is nothing but being butthurt by all the chatter on the internet...

Which is completely opposite of what he said in his FB rant

Had an NFL guy on 102.3 here in Chatttown today. Said that the red flags on Jake's attitude had been around Scout circles for awhile now.

Actually they were 5-7 the year before Jalen arrived. Tennessee is one of only a handful of teams that have never had less than 5 wins since the season expanded to 10 plus games.
You sir, are correct and I did not know that!

Oh boy Hyams just unleashed the story on the mother not obeying orders to settle down when she was escorted out by police at the Florida game. Let the games begin.

Jalen's a grown man. His step father should not be speaking for him. Jalen should be speaking and facing whatever music he's created for himself. I was willing to listen to mom and let it go at that point. But suddenly step dada, uncle, vol74 are making the rounds and speaking for Jalen and that is a bunch of chickensquat.
