Had no idea about this, and SIAP, but I read this on TOS this morning (per Brent Hubbs):

"I thought Hurd could transfer down and be eligible next fall. But that's not the case. Because he only has one year of playing eligibility he would have to sit for a year anywhere he goes using his redshirt year and then play in 2018.

There's no way he can play anywhere in 2017.

My guess is that he ends up declaring for the draft."

All I can say is...wow.

He can go to FCS and play next year, or if he can graduate before next Fall he can play anywhere as a graduate transfer.

This is one of the worst decisions. I can't help but feel bad for Hurd. If he would have played with intensity this year he breaks the record and probably gets drafted.

Instead he gives poor performances, quits the team, and more than likely will end up not drafted.

No because he only has one year of playing eligibility left. So he can't play two more years.

I don't know the situation or what's going on in the program just find it hard to believe that it was that bad that he had to leave right now. Seems like waiting a few months and declaring for the draft would have been the best option but who knows

Confusing to say the least with the way players transfer these days. To be close to a sick mom, the university doesn't offer a class, etc.

Here's the questions I would like to have answered.
Is Hurd still on the team?
Or he just quit and will use the practice facilities?
I don't anyone has clarified these, or I miss it.

I personally would like to see him move on at this time to his next step in life.

"If transferring to a Division I school, the athlete must play a sport other than football, men’s or women’s basketball, or baseball. The exception is that an athlete can transfers to a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS or I-AA) school and use this exception provided he or she has at least two seasons of competition remaining. In Division II, any sport may use the one-time transfer exception."

Wow....never realized that one before. I guess this situation rarely comes up this late in someone's career. Most transfers are Freshmen or Soph.

Moral of the story.....never doubt what Hubbs says

He is no longer on the official roster. I doubt he is around any more.

My guess is that Hurd is legitimately wanting to change positions and doesn't want to "waste" time sticking around until late Dec/early January practicing for a meaningless bowl game. So he's bailing now and will immediately start working with a TE coach and have 6 months to learn the position before the draft.

I haven't seen this posted either, but is there a chance he could graduate in after this year and be a graduate transfer?

And that's dicey at best for him. His draft stock as a running back is very low and even though he is a great athlete who catches the ball with great natural ability IMO, that's still gonna be a difficult transition to TE. He's in no man's land right now if he declares.

It's difficult to know what the kid is thinking and all the emotions messing with him.....and I understand 100% that he's ready to be done and wants away from Butch and the team/program.....I've been there with jobs/places of employment.

But damn, he just needed to tough it out for 5 more games, about 2 more months. Sounds like his mother and family disagreed with him leaving now, but somebody should've been able to get through to him with how much money he's likely to lose by handling it like this. Jmo.

I think that team meeting was a doozy and he knew he wasn't a part of the team anymore. Everything since is spin.

Quit on the team but use their practice facility? Seriously? Even our AD is not that dumb. Plus the liability issue would get the lawyers frowning on that option.

I thought this as well, BUT, he has had somebody in his ear it seems. Whoever it is advising him, has already cost him an untold amount of money not to mention damage to his character that will last a lifetime. Just like a jury does not ever find someone innocent they can only find you not guilty, there's no coming back from a legacy of midseason quitter. It didn't have to be that way, he and his advisors made it this way. There is no telling what sort of poor decisions are to be public about this young man in the comng days.
