Hurd deserves respect

Listen: if Hurd wasn't injured, he would have been in on the conservative inside run plays. That's his forte. No way Butch would have risked the game if he wasn't banged up.

You get your bell rung every game but some are worst than others. I think he may have been suffering from headaches so they kept him out. I have had probably well over 150 concussions in college. Most the time you get light headed but say nothing. Major concussions knock you out, or you don't know where you are.

When I say concussions I'm including getting your bell rung, because technically those are light concussions.

Dang. Glad you're still able to put together coherent sentences. I'm thinking a lot of people really don't realize just how violent the game is.

He got his bell rung, that's why he didn't return. All the other rumors are false.

This makes sense. The youngster had >40 some odd yards on 10 carries. Folks, that's not a bad day for a RB when you rush for >4 ypc. That he only had ten carries when normally he would have had more and was held out for health goes hand in glove to me.

Every game your gonna get that buzz feeling at some point. Players never report it tho because we never thought it was so serious.

I remember getting that several times in high school, once or twice pretty good (Gary Carter about broke my neck when I attempted a crack back block on him - guy was a horse in high school before playing bball at UT). But the level of athleticism, size and speed you guys dealt with at that level I just can't relate to.

Does anyone else think that just maybe he was expecting Malone to lay a hand on or at the least slow that guy coming up from behind him down?

I honestly think he did'nt know that guy was even there. Hence the easy stroll to the end zone.

Hurd is anything but a showboat.

Like most posters have said, Hurd made a mistake. Learned a lesson and won't happen again. But I love using him as a receiver. Great hands and gets open. Glad to see we are doing more of this with him. Our O line has to continue to improve though. Better with Hall and Jones on that right side, but still not where we should be.

This is something I've noticed in the past couple of games, Hurd being used downfield more. The times in past seasons I recall him catching passes were on simple screen plays. But it looks like the "wrinkles" Debord added to the offense include putting Hurd downfield more as Kamara has been doing.

Not a bad thing at all.

C'mon guys, he played and scored a TD after the fumble.

Either he got injured or something else happened - it wasn't the fumble that helped him find the bench.

Agree. I'm afraid he's injured enough to come out of the game but man enough to not show his injury.. I hope he got benched for the team's sake.

All the negative fans definitely need to lay off this kid!! He is a phenomenal player for UT and represents the university with class! He is a true VFL and I am extremely proud to have him on this team! This team is extremely resilient and very competitive til the clock hits zero! Imo they have already lived up to the hype this year, regardless of what happens these next 2 weeks! Kids like Hurd and the rest of the team are what makes being a vol fan so enjoyable this season!!! They are one of my favorite teams from top to bottom of alll time! Go freakin vols!!!

The benefits of that happening outweigh the costs. While it was a lapse, it's definitely something Hurd will never do and that will carry in to his NFL career. Good teaching points for future players as well.

Yes, sir, Hurd is a winner. I agree that little fluke at the end zone will probably never happen again and he contributes so much to this team that it shouldn't even be mentioned again. It's water off a duck's back and you put those kinds of things behind you and press on toward the goal.

That reminds me.

You see the way he kept driving for more yardage right through the defense and dragged half a dozen players trying to tackle him at the twenty, right down to the five-yard line with him on his back whether they wanted to go that direction or not?

It didn't surprise me at all to find out he's already fifteenth in all-time school history in career yards and last year's rushing yards were the 12th most put up in a season ever. He was the 2016 Outback Bowl MVP. Fun to watch while he's here, but there's no doubt this man is going places.

I could list Hurd's accomplishments, highlights, and strengths, but you know them. Yes he should've ran through the goal line, he let up and coasted and got tagged by a Georgia boy he didn't know was even near him. As it was stated earlier in the thread he probably feels bad about it and learned from it. I get a kick out of posters who watch a play and somehow know what their motives were. He's worked hard, played hard, as hard as any back since Charlie Garner. Speaking just for myself I'm proud of him and wouldn't trade him for any back in the SEC.

There's a difference between respect and calling a guy out for a bonehead play that almost lost us the game. Nobody said one play erases what all he has done for us and I'm as proud of him as anyone but it's plays like that why we aren't putting points on the board earlier in games. That stuff cannot happen the next 2 games.

Let the gas off on one play and paid for it. Big picture: has busted his azz for 3 years, doesn't showboat, doesn't trash talk, blocks like a mofo, work horse of a running back in a scheme that frequently leaves him fighting like hell to get back to the LOS, reliable, has won multiple games for us, and is still likely to be the all-time leading rusher in UT history. I'd bet nobody is more unhappy or embarrassed with that play than him. The small number of fans trash talking him and seeming to delight in him "getting benched" suck.

Agree. And at the risk of beating a dead horse, we wouldn't be 5-0 without his fumble recovery in the endzone in game 1.

I understand that it was a mistake and those kind of mistakes almost cost us a game and will bite us moving foward.

I just would think after all Hurd has done for this team and program why would anybody feel the need to even bring it up? Why have the "it's a screw up so I'm gonna call him out on it just cause I can" mentality?

So what, he made a mistake just like every other football player does in every game. His was magnified cause of the situation but Hurd has been one of the most instrumental pieces in bringing UT back to the forefront of college football plus we got the dub. No need to even bring it up.

He's earned that

Some of you all are just a special kind of ignorant.

Coaches do not bench their best players because they make mistakes - Ever! If that's the case, our whole team would be benched. He went in after that play and then scored a TD, but hey, we're going to bench you now. Idiots.

I agree. I think Kamara was simply getting more ypc than Hurd at the time for whatever reason. That's why they compliment each other. Good problem not bad problem...

Hurd is a beast. Without him this team wouldn't be what it is.

When we were trying to run the clock out with 2 minutes left in the game, I was really wishing we had Hurd in there.

You and me both. All the last minute dramatics could have been avoided had Jalen been in to rumble for a first down. Not to say that is how it would have played out, but him being benched is like trying your good hand behind your back.

Hurd was blindsided, as I watched the play again, I didn't see any loafing on Hurd's part

It's a learning moment. No. Jalen wasn't loafing, but he eased up on his run 1 1/2 yards from the goal line. And he needed to run through to the end zone full speed. And it cost his team a TD. A simple mental error a whole lot of players make every year, but repeating them is inexcusable.

Champions learn from mistakes, and don't make excuses. If Hurd is a champion, he sure doesn't want well meaning fans making them for him.

I'm not bashing Hurd one bit. I'm puzzled as to why a media member who spoke to team sources reported that he had not been tended to by the medical staff well after he had not played several series.

That media member is the same one who last year did a whole segment on Bama's use of oxygen on the sidelines like it was some amazing concept she had never heard of. She has zero idea what is going on out there.
