Hurd deserves respect

I would bet Butch said/says nothing to Hurd regarding that error, knowing full well he need not...

I would bet Jones DOES say something about it to him privately. And Yes Hurd also did a bone head play against Ohio with the head butt. He usually plays hard but seems to take a play or two off now and then. Same issue as Foreman yesterday on the long pass play that almost beat us.

Hurd wants the NFL but few teams tolerate not having your head on straight when on the field.

Just remember Dobbs fumble in the endzone recovered by Hurd to win the App State game. Without that we are not undefeated (and probably not even 4-1). Enough said.

If the coach said he had an injury, that should settle it. No need conjecturing about a another reason such as the fumble. Please enjoy this win. Enough of speculation.

Tough love. He made a forgivable mistake but there are consequences in life for the choices in life made. He will be better for the discipline.

Jalen Hurd 's value to this team can't be overstated, he's been money in every game on 3rd and shorts. :good!:

Let the gas off on one play and paid for it. Big picture: has busted his azz for 3 years, doesn't showboat, doesn't trash talk, blocks like a mofo, work horse of a running back in a scheme that frequently leaves him fighting like hell to get back to the LOS, reliable, has won multiple games for us, and is still likely to be the all-time leading rusher in UT history. I'd bet nobody is more unhappy or embarrassed with that play than him. The small number of fans trash talking him and seeming to delight in him "getting benched" suck.

Look for Hurd to have monster games from here on out. Just waite and see.

Speculating that he had an injury is laughable but thanks for playing. It was coach speak for he needs to learn a lesson. He played on the last kickoff play so the injury comment is null and void.

With that said, we absolutely need Hurd and have needed him for all of our games thus far. Hope he snaps and clears that mental error and plays like a hoss, especially the next 2 games.

Open post to Jalen Hurd...

You have carried and helped carry this team for 3 years. You have been blown up in the backfield numerous times due to lack of blocking and as far as I know never complained or showed anything in public to embarrass your teammates. You have balled out in so many ways and absolutely grinded teams down. You have been so unselfish to stay in and block, share the backfield with AK unselfishly and been a joy to watch. You mean everything to true fans and we are behind you. Absolutely behind you.

He seems to learn from his mistakes. Every kid makes them. He gets better at life and football after making them.

Hurd is the man. He always plays hard, & with our oline, he has to. I'm not gonna kill the guy over 1 play.

Don't know where you are getting this "no respect" from. Many of us are simply stating that it APPEARED he got benched for his bone headed play. Pretty sure everyone still respects the heck out of that young man

So you can't get a minor injury and sit out a few series until the pain subsides?
And I thought that happened often, well f me.

Player was in his blind spot but good lesson moving forward. I take Hurd over any back in the SEC! Tough, hard hitting back teams dread tackling.

He was not attended to once by trainers. Still had his helmet and played on the next to last play of the game.

He either took his own butt out of the game or this was a "you need to learn from this" moment.

Does anyone else think that just maybe he was expecting Malone to lay a hand on or at the least slow that guy coming up from behind him down?

I don't think he even saw him; he was blind-sided. He can't concentrate on what he's doing and watch the whole field, especially to his blind side.

Some of you all are just a special kind of ignorant.

Coaches do not bench their best players because they make mistakes - Ever! If that's the case, our whole team would be benched. He went in after that play and then scored a TD, but hey, we're going to bench you now. Idiots.

I respect Hurd. That was a costly mistake. Dobbs makes mistakes too but always seems to redeem himself. He did not seem injured to me and yes, he did play after the fumble (it was early). I personally thought he was benched cause of the fumble after the game was manageable (Deboard should have ran the clock out and gotten a first down instead of giving the ball back to GA being too conservative. We've been through this.) That is not talking smack, just what I thought. We got lucky, again. Am I happy we got lucky? Yes. Do I think we need to improve so we can win without being lucky? Yes. GA ran it up our throats all game against our linebackers. Anyway, Hurd wanted to go in, he was ready. We have Kamara too y'all, he is faster but not as smashmouth. Hurd will be good to go against A&M. But we have more weapons than Hurd. Jennings is the man and Malone DEFINITELY needs more touches.

We should have been able to run the clock out and it almost got us beat. That's what happens when you go ultra conservative; you can't stop playing. One more first down would have sealed it. I put that on the coaches.

We can agree to disagree on the so-called "injury" but regardless of all the shenanigans Hurd bleeds orange. We need him and we should support him and believe he will correct that mental error next time. We cannot get through TAMU and Bama without him.

Go Vols!!

He will be fine. Made a mistake. It won't happen again as long as he plays football.

You see this type of playing at the very highest level of the sport, the pros. From the earliest exposure live or on TV these guys have see this type thing. Sports coverage has shown this behavior as "just boys being boys, let them have a little fun". However, when is type action backfires, when someone else is acting a like a man trying to make the best of a bad situation, it really makes the play look childish. That being said ,when Hurd was going down field he had to have look both ways and knew he was open. To his right was his tightest coverage. His mistake was not looking both ways and he may have done so, looking back to his left second. He didn't react fast enough it seem to me. That was his fault on this play, one of his few I can remember this year or at all sense he has been at UT. It just happened to be in a big spot.

it was a bad mistake. agree wtih those of you that said he knows it, and it won't happen again. it was an uncharacteristic move, for a guy that had always given fantastic effort. so i call it an anomaly and move on....

i think though, for a positive to come out of this was that he did get benched the rest of the game, after that series early in the 3rd. kudos to CBJ for sending a message, and no better way to do that than to do it to a legitimate star on the team.

lesson learned, should expect great effort going forward.

no disrespect should follow him, that play doesn't diminish what he's meant to this program or his prior performances.

anybody thinking otherwise....well, is just dumb.

He scored AFTER the fumble.
Are you suggesting he was benched for scoring?

What was the injury then after he scored a touchdown using his "lower extremities"? He had a mental error and Kamara had the hot hand and so he was benched.
