Huge positive from Saturday

There were so many times during the Jones era where we headed into a game against a cupcake and thought “okay, we’ll get a big lead and then get the freshman QB some experience, let everyone play, build some depth, etc.” But then we’d play down to the level of the competition and limp into the 4th quarter up 13-10 which forced Dobbs and the other starters to go the whole way. This game was like the old UT. Got a huge lead early and a lot of guys got to play. That rarely happened under Butch, Oh, and on a couple of goal line TDs, the OL blew ETSU off the line, again like the old UT. I know they started slow but (surprise!) we adjusted. Yes, we may still go 4-8 but that was such an encouraging sign. Well done, boys. GO VOLS!
Butch blew out plenty of people.

Austin Peay and Western Kentucky in 2013.
Utah State and UTC in 2014.
Bowling Green, Western Carolina, and North Texas in 2015 (I know that game was a 24-0 final but anybody watching knew North Texas had no chance of doing anything in that game).
Tennessee Tech in 2016.
Indiana St in 2017.

His habit of playing vastly inferior teams close actually became more prevalent late in his tenure with his more talented, more experienced teams.

ETSU is a cupcake's cupcake. They are a bad FCS team. I'm not sure you can really take away any positives from the game because you are supposed to dominate them; the talent gap is so gigantic. However, you can take away negatives, like the fact our O-line couldn't move the line of scrimmage against them for a quarter and a half. There are different levels of cupcakes.

1) The good teams from bad FBS conferences (sometimes these teams aren't cupcakes at all)
2) The mediocre/bad teams from bad FBS conferences (like UTEP, next week's opponent)
3) Good FCS teams
4) Mediocre/bad FCS teams (where ETSU falls)

My hat is off to Coach Pruitt and his staff for never taking the foot off the gas pedal. Wins like these are just so commonplace with the big players like Bama, GA, OSU, OK, etc., that it was nice to see a well executed game plan where we were on the winning side. Hate having squeaked by so many cupcake teams for soooo many years! GBO

I'm not remembering the last time Tennessee "squeaked by" a bad FCS team. I'm not sure it's ever happened.

Not all cupcakes are created equal. ETSU isn't even on the same level of a team like UMass (just to take a team from last year). That game was quite embarrassing, but UMass is a whole level above ETSU.

The lightning delay occurred during half time against WV. Offensive improvement had already happened, hence the close halftime score.

We had the momentum before the break, didn't have it after. We'll never know if it would have been different without the weather extension or not.

It would have been precisely zero different. West Virginia's offense totally overmatched our defense. Very similar to the 2010 Oregon game.

Lol, you crack me up dude. You get on here just to disagree with anything and everything that is posted. Literally EVERYTHING. In my 7 years on this board, I don’t think I’ve personally witnessed you acknowledge someone being right. Carry on.....
