how you could tell it's over walking out of Neyland tonight

This is the saddest most painful observation.
Very telling

What was really sad was watching the fans leave with 5 minutes left on the clock and only 4 points behind. It's pretty simple though, UT is gradually catching up talent wise but it's going to take a while, to build any kind of depth. A top 10 class is good but you don't catch up quickly when 5 of the teams on your schedule, that are already more talented, have a higher rated recruiting class.

And your argument as it applies to Arkansas is?
Inferior talent and recruiting- how is this going to change?

It was the same walking out of Neyland after the Troy game. You could have heard a pin drop at the stadium and all the way down Cumberland. I knew then that Dooley's days were numbered.

Again, I've been watching since the 60's. I've seen a lot of football and some really horrid starts to a season. 1988 recent enough for you? Until this team and/or the staff quit, it's not over. Right now I'm looking for 4 or 5 wins. We still have a lot of football to play. The east crown was never realistic. Just a fantasy of a hungry fanbase. We've got USC, UK, Vandy, and NT. That's 4 very winnable games. Never count out UT against UGA. Just like the years USC somehow managed to beat a better dawg squad, we seem to play well against them. Hope that's the case this year. We'll see what kind of character and fight this team really has from here on out. Is is just them parroting what the coaches say or do they really believe in each other? We're about to find out.

We got our answer last night my man.

I had more success sitting down on 3rd down for what than standing. I was like 0-4 standing. meh I tried.

I was setting next to a Arky fan that was saying 3rd down for what when the vols had the ball. And he was right, the Vols only produce 29yds in the 4th qtr. You can't beat tennessee wesleyan with that output.:hi:

No point getting mad about things. Might as well stay calm about it, the coaching staff certainly thinks things are ok and headed in the right direction. So I'm just matching their emotional intensity. I was hacked off about OU and UF but honestly I already had a bad feeling at 17-0 for OU and worse after our last TD in the swamp. This week I knew we'd lose so it didn't upset me.

That's the ticket. Nothing some anti depressants and some Jack Daniels can't handle because in the end we all die. So, I would not even bother going to work Monday.

Hello, my brother. The wisdom of age: I sat in Sanford Stadium when the Dawgs chewed us up 33-0 in '88. Nobody was whining about losing close games to perennially good teams, we just wanted a f'g W. Johnny always kept you guessing. 0-6 start, baby! These young guys want immediate gratification and are ready to walk early on. No bandwagon fans, please: we cheer and suffer alike as a family. So buck up. Johnny's rebuilding was a meandering process. In the 70's we beat Bama and ND to only lose to such powerhouses as Rutgers, Army and the Mean Green of this year's homecoming guest, North Texas State. He had built and in later years built some great teams, but that year was a nightmare. We have been through worse and we are much improved despite the tantrums here. Go Vols!

Finally, a reasonable post. I tried to tell this to a young Un sitting behind me Saturday. Our younger fans that cut their teeth during the 90's get a little too ahead of themselves on their expectations. This team has a very small margin of error, and missing some key starters is really hurting this team. No one wants to hear it but patience is needed. This year's team is much better than last years, if you cannot see that then your not too bright. Think about it this way. What if we actually had some high quality upperclassmen to go along with this young talent?

They would still be under coached.

You had to bring up NTS. I sat in that stadium for nearly 30 min after that game in disbelief. To this day it still hurts.

It took the Manning era recruiting class (most of the 98 team came in with him even if he was a rookie in the NFL when they won the NC; like Kahlil he hammered the phones to get people he wanted to play with) a coaching troika (Fulmer, Cut and Chief were just so good together even if they struggled with the old balls coach and they were never as good separated) and some magic (a late PI call against Stracuse and The Stoerner stumble and fumble) to get us the crystal trophy. The point is sometimes the breaks happen in the right mix of people and you are a hero; sometimes they go against you and you are a goat. The media is always there to lift you up and more often to bum's rush your irrelevance. It has to fit a narrative for the tv schedule - the grand CBS/ESPN cabal. It's all about eyes and money. We are a lot closer than the Butch bashers can see. Even Saban has said it begins with being a damn good recruiter.

We left at halftime. The outcome was evident. I was surprised how close it was.

I haven't given up on this squad, but it's obvious something has to change. this team is anemic. And so predictable a competent coach can exploit their gameplan in the second half.

Glad I didn't have to hear the silence on the way out of the stadium.

We left right after the last play and it was evident. I watched some of our players head for the tunnel, not towards the Pride. It was sad. It was eerily quiet leaving too..

I want to play what if . What if we beat Bama or Georgia or both? Just saying, would that mean that we really are on the right track and our timing is just a little off? If one of these three scenarios were to happen could we say that next year might really be our year. Just curious to see what you all thought if one of these actually happened

If this team could've won either the OU or Fla game then it's a totally different season. I think the Fla loss took a toll on the team. Hell, I know it did the fans. I can imagine what it was like for a coach or player.

If they had beat Ark things would not have been so gloomy, but they didn't,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Why go I at all if you are going to bail at halftime. Halftime? Really! Are the fans so snake bitten that we have enough hope to show up, paying for parking, tickets, etc., but not enough confidence to stay? Hell, that was a close game. What would you do if we got throttled? Because it has happened before during and after the so called good years. I have sat through some real debacles that did not involve Butch and company. Spurrier at UF (you remember the old balls coach) humbled and then taunted us. Miami smashed us with Frank Gore in Neyland. Alabama has taken over the stadium several times in recent years because our "fans" bailed and sold them tickets.

In one particularly painful game, we fumble on our bread and butter over the top and in to the end zone play (called "6 Otis") before the half against Georgia. They scooped, scored and beat the hell out of us in the second half. I have not seen 6 Otis since. Learning the wrong lessons in the face of adversity seems to be a Tennessee tradition. Either way, you paid for and they play 4 quarters, strange stuff happens. It is all part of the game. I have seen us pull out a few miracles too. Go Vols (Stay Fans)!

Yep, everybody sure is sad. I don't feel sorry a single one of you. I was not able to go to the game, had to listen to our first 14 o. The radio finally got in front of the TV, when Arkansas scored, I'm the jinx, blame me too. Flame the coaches, flame the players flame the fans.......I can't blame anyone for choosing not to go to the game because of our record, I will attend when I can. I can't blame anyone that is sad for our losing ways, I am too and will always be sad when we lose. It's hard times. I remember back in July post saying how 16 is the year, and anyone that said we were better all that was said pump the brakes not till 16, it's just hype this year not till 16, don't get your hopes up till 16, congratulations you are right, thank goodness your not on the team, because you quit, I have not seen a player quit , the TV showed fans giving up, I've had apposing fans compliment my crew for staying till the bitter end those that left I hope you beat traffic, that is so important, to beat traffic.
