How would you view the direction of the progam be if....

I don't believe that anyone else could have infused our program with so much excitement, energy, enthusiasm, confidence, and HOPE as one Lane Kiffin. I am amazed at what CLK has been able to do in just 3 short months. First of all, no other coach would have been able to assemble such a "dream team" coaching staff as this guy. No other coach would have been able to steal as many high level recruits in such a short amount of time, and no other coach would have been able to keep Tennessee in the spotlight the way CLK has.

I don't think Kelly was the right coach to bring in the top talent in country. He is a solid coach and he would probably have come in and done the same thing Fulmer had been doing. We would see lots of 8-4 and 9-3 seasons and we would sneak in the SEC championship game once in a while but we would not ever get back to elite status.

I think Leach is a one trick pony who's reaped the benefits of playing in a conference with weak defensive teams. I believe he would have done terrible at UT.

Kelly was my choice.

Looks like we may be ok with Kiffin though :)

GO VOLS!

For the kool-aid drinkers, it still would have been the best thing MH could have possibly done. Those same people would leap with extreme joy given that coach Leach/Kelly has a "plan" and we were really going places. Moreover, those same people would joke about how Auburn hired a coach with a losing record and laugh at how ridiculous he acted off the field. yada yada yada.

For everyone else, who knows what the reaction would be.

if Auburn had just hired Lane, Monte and Coach O I doubt many would be laughing. Well, the stupid ones might

No one would have played a game yet still, so regardless we'd all be here talking about how great our new coach is :)

I'd be pretty damn pissed if we had Leach and Kiffin went to Auburn. We would have been rebuilding for damn near a decade.

As for Kelly, I don't know. Maybe he could have coached our guys up real well. Maybe not. But they at least attempt to put the ball on the ground. If we didn't get Kiffin, I hope we would have gotten Patterson, cause he's the only one who'd have brought anything close to what we have now.

Honestly, CLK and his staff are way more than I thought they would be. All indications thus far are pointing to building a football machine that won't be stopped!! If he keeps the current head of steam we will be renaming athletic venues!!

The guy I wanted at the beginning was Chris Petersen from Boise State. Kiffin was my 2nd choice, and Butch Davis my 3rd. I didn't think Gruden was a possibility...

Ironic, huh? lol

Now that I look back on it though, I really think there's no possible way it could've turned out any better than it did. I just hope this entire staff stays together for at least 4 years. I think if they do that, they get at least 1 SEC championship.

i am glad we dont have to worry about that! at least we didnt get CHIZIK! LOL

Yeah, his best record of...3-9... along with 1 and 2 win seasons year in and year out...would be BEYOND impossible to stomach and would make Fulmer look like the winningest coach in college football history (which he obviously is not).

BTW, I believe that Kiffin will do great things at UT. GO VOLS!!!!!

I would have been fine with Kelly, but honestly, he could not have put this staff together. What Kiffin has done here in about 4 months is nothing short of incredible, and he hasn't coached a game yet. But then that's the real test, isn't it?

That's a hard question to answer because you never know how things would have played out.

I was pulling for Brian Kelly orginally, but I'm thrilled about how Lane has done things so far.

I just hope it translates to Ws... that's all that matters.

If we had hired Mike Leach I wouldn't have a view of the program since my hands would still be over my eyes.

Yep. I'd still be a Vols fan, of course, hoping for the best, but there's no way the first months or recruiting would have been anything close to this exciting.

It would have been very familiar to the 'wait and see' off-season that we had with Clawson. And the results may very well have been the same.

Call me crazy, but I'm not sure I'd take Butch Davis or John Gruden and whatever staffs that they put together in an even trade with what we have right now.

I actually really wanted Brian Kelly. I still believe he'll be a big time coach very soon. So, I obviously would have been okay with that.
If Auburn would have gotten CLK and the whole staff he's put together, I'd be a little glad. I'm no Auburn fan, but I do love to watch them beat Alabama!
CLK and staff haven't done anything yet to prove themselves on the field (in the SEC). But they've definitely done enough to make the rest of the conference nervous...whether they want to admit it or not.

Hmmm. I wouldn't have had the confidence in our program getting back to the elite status that I have now. Not saying we wouldve never made it back to that status with Leach or Kelly or Davis, but I think it wouldve taken much longer
