We had hired Brian Kelly or Mike Leach, and Auburn had hired Lane Kiffin and company.

If we had hired Mike Leach I wouldn't have a view of the program since my hands would still be over my eyes.

I would be seriously questioning if I should remain a Volunteer fanatic.

Leach would win for a couple of years, and Kelly would bolt after a few years for a bigger payday. I actually think Kiffin will last a little bit longer. The only way I see Kiffin leaving is if its for NFL money, and even then I'm not sure if he would take it. Kelly wouldn't have been bad, but the moon and the planets would have to align just right for Leach to win in this league. Mangino wouldn't have been a bad hire, but I'm plenty happy with the direction of the program.

Good question.

I'd was on the Kelly bandwagon but I am more than happy with what Kiffin has done and the staff we have.

yeah, who knows what would have happened with Kelly. With Leach, I think the suicide rate in the state goes up, but Kelly seems to have the makings. Had Kiffin gone to Auburn, who knows that he could have pulled the same coaches? Knoxville isn't the coolest city in the world, but it blows the doors off of Auburn/Opelika.

Not going lie, i was hoping kelley would get the job. If leach would have been hired, i would have been a vol-in-tears. (sorry for the horrible joke)

I'm excited about the Kiffin hire, but the Mangino hire would have been great. A balanced offense with an emphasis on short passes in space and smaller backs with great speed would have fit the cogs we currently have in place. That said, we wouldn't have had half the staff we have now.

It depends. If Kiffin would've gone to Auburn and assembled the same staff I would've been green with envy. I for one wanted Leach at first. But the Oklahoma game dissolved any admiration I had for Leach. The absolute refusal to change his game plan shocked me. I do not know much about Kelly, it's very hard to judge his coaching abilities being in a sub par conference. There are arguments that he has less talent than others in his conference, which raises another issue, can he recruit?

Thankfully I don't have to worry about it. Because now I am in la la land with the coaching staff we have.

Can't imagine anyone doing better than Kiffin has this far. No possible way anyone even remotely mentioned as a realistic candidate could have assembled this staff or recruiting class.

Good question.

Gotta hand it to Mike Hamilton...looks like he did a darn good job. Workin like heck, to get us a good head ball coach.

Kelly's a good coach; he's going to get a shot at a national program eventually, and I'd expect him to do well. I would've been happy if we'd hired him. However. Hamilton was pretty much on record as wanting to replicate the Pearl hire -- at least from an "energy" standpoint -- and hiring Kelly would not have done a heck of a lot to move the meter, which Hamilton pretty clearly wanted to do.

Hiring Kelly (or Gary Patterson) would have been the safe hire, but it's the four to five year plan -- you do a little better next year, and then you build off of that by recruiting guys who are a little better than that, and then you do better the next year. Hiring Kiffin and his all-star team was swinging for the fences -- yeah he's a risk, but on the other hand, Brian Kelly probably wouldn't have been able to get Bryce Brown to return a phone call this year. Kiffin came with a plan to get Tennessee competitive again, NOW, and Hamilton went with it.

I have been thrilled with the Kiffin hire. I just can't imagine anyone of the other coaches in the running having the energy level and the motivation he has.
