. . . And that the team was then distracted by all of the rumors and speculation. However, they were highly focused the following year when Dickey returned to Neyland with the Reptilian Horde. Bobby Scott eviscerated them to the tune of 385 yards en route to a 38-7 victory.

National TV with the Goodyear blimp flying around town too I believe. Battle did televised "PSAs" that aired all week asking for the fans to be classy when Dickey returned to Neyland Stadium. I swear I think that when Dickey was introduced in the pre-game player/coach intros he did a double take. The cheers over powered the boos and he appeared shocked.

In terms of historical significance, Dickey is second only to Neyland.

He would be sitting on a perch on par with Bear Bryant had he never left for Florida. Even after his departure, the momentum he had created made Bill Battle look like an icon in the making for a brief time. That notion, though, vanished as the number of Dickey recruits on the roster dwindled each year.

I also believe Dickey served the Vols very well as AD. He initiated substantial facilities upgrades which greatly aided Majors' rebuild efforts. The current "state of the art" status of Vol facilities can easily be traced to Dickey's initiatives in this area.

Yeah, it grieved me when he bolted for his alma mater, but I came to understand just how powerful that pull can be (see Johnny Majors). Over time I, too, have come to view Dickey as second only to General Neyland as far as significance to the Vol cause is concerned.

Conclusion Reached: roughly 80% of VolNation believe Phil Fulmer is the second-greatest coach in Tennessee history. But the 16% who think Johnny Majors is the second-greatest, they talk the most about it.

Go Vols!

1. Neyland
2. Dickey
3. Fulmer
4. Majors/Wyatt (tie)
Dickey doesn't get enough credit for the job he did while coach at Tennessee. He was getting the best High School talent from Georgia, Florida, Alabama and of course Tennessee. My personal opinion is if Dickey had stayed Tennessee would have been a top 5 program in the 1970's and Bryant would have left Alabama to be the head coach of the Miami Dolphins instead of Don Shula.

Context? That was Battle's last team. Pert Jenkins was a 225lb defensive tackle, and the best athlete
on the team. Thats what Majors inherited.

I'm going to have to disagree with your characterization of Jenkins as the best athlete on that team. As bare as the proverbial cupboard was upon Johnny's arrival, eventual first-round draft pick Stanley Morgan was still on the '76 team; he accounted for 11 touchdowns from scrimmage, which was 2nd in the conference that year. Morgan was great, one of the greatest Patriot receivers of all time, but Pert was a better ATHLETE!

We played bball with Stanley and Pert abused him on the court. Sorry.

I put Fulmer ahead of Majors because of the national championship and his overall record, but it was a tough call. Majors rebuilt the program from the ground up, but it took him over a decade to do so. Fulmer hit the ground running by inheriting a successful program with some of the best talent in the nation and took it to another level.

I agree.

Neyland
Majors
Fulmer

I leave Dickey off because of the Florida scandal. If not for the bowl game loss then bolting the next week he would be, probably above Majors.
