How would Hurd have done in 1997 and Lewis in 2014?

The UT Football twitter account have been posting stats all day. One of these stats said Hurd had the most 100 yard games (4) since Lewis had 7 100 yard games in 1997. Hurd also had the most yards for a freshman rb (899) since Lewis '97 freshman campaign (1364). I was wondering how do you think Hurd would of done if you kept all factors the same and replaced Lewis wit Hurd and viceversa. I am not asling who is the better running back bUT how do you think these players would do in each others system and surrounded by the talent from those years.

Hurd would have most likely played more sooner...Cut was a bully about blocking...'s why Levine started against Florida that year.

not very well considering he would have been 2. :)

Safe to assume Hurd would've had similar numbers to Lewis in 97. Just a great environment for a RB. Great QB, solid OL, I-formation with lead blocker.

I also think Lewis would've had similar numbers as Hurd with this year's team, although Lewis seemed to have a slightly better feel for when and how to make the proper cut upfield. Hurd had some struggles with that early on.

Nice to have comparable talent again.

I love hypothetical fantasy fun time! The 97 line would have enabled Hurd to develop his timing much earlier. Its his receiving production out of the backfield that would have been the big ticket. Yes! it is awesome to have comparable talent. This kid is growing up before our eyes. The hypothetical 2015 campaign has me straight up delirious!

Well he didn't play but a couple of plays against UT-C and Vandy, so that's about 250 more yards rushing, so if he had the 97 line 500 to 600 more yards rushing and 5 or 6 more touchdowns, so Hurd has just scratched the surface, now next year he will be sharing the ball with A.K., we just might have 2 1,000 rusher on the same team, bright days ahead for our BIG ORANGE MACHINE, and by this time next year we will be a well oiled BIG ORANGE MACHINE.:clapping:

How would Leonard Little have done if he had not attended JUCO? Would he have gotten a couple more sacks and beaten Reggie Whites all time sack leader record? He lost a full year of eligiblity!

What if J. Lewis had returned for his senior season? WOuld Travis Henry have caught him as the all time leading yards rusher in U.T. history?

What if Cut had not left for Duke? Would Fulmer still be the head coach at U.T.?

What if Bray had not gotten injured so often, would we have won more games and Dooley still been our head coach?

What if the assistant coaches had not let more than 11 players on the field against LSU, would we have won that game and thus gotten more wins for that season and gone to a larger bowl games, other than the Music City Bowl?

Lewis was an absolute freak athlete. He arrived on campus with the ability to bench press 500 lbs as an 18 year old and he could just run the football (or run over the defense). What a great player and potential NFL HOF'er.

Hurd is no Lewis. Just think what Lewis would have done, if they had let him play from day one.

I don't think that U.T. would let a 35 year old convicted felon play this year, since they didn't let A.J.

In a vacuum, Hurd would experience a significant increase in production facing the athletes of '97 while Lewis would suffer only a negligible decrease in performance playing in 2014.

Maybe...but you gotta think with our O-Line, cuts probably had to happen quicker and more often than usual. When you have inexperience blocking for inexperience that would happen I guess. But I agree, Hurd did make a few cuts that had me scratching my head. I'm sure he's only going to get better and more fun to watch. Hurd will make a name for himself. Book it!

Hurd is nowhere near Lewis. Lewis dominated every time he stepped on the field. Injuries were the only defender that ever stopped Jamal. He would dominate in any time period at any level. Jamal is your once in a lifetime back.

God do I miss me some I-formation with the power off-tackle runs. I still wish we had it and mixed it into our read option offense. That was the pinnacle of Tennessee power rushing. Often when we lined it up, defenses knew it was coming, and we still smashed them in the mouth.

But oh, yeah, Lewis. Lewis was the best power back with speed I think Tennessee has ever had, with the possible exception of Reggie Cobb. Hurd is quite awesome, but I really want to see what he can do with an improved offensive line this fall. I guess the verdict is still out for me. As for this past season, it comes back to playing time. Lewis became the feature RB in '97, rarely sharing carries. Hurd still shares a lot of his carries in this read offense. I can't say who'd have had more yards.

Jamal was the most freakish back I have seen, except maybe Bo Jackson. Neither may have had the longeivity of Herschel, but when they were healthy (Jamal in 1997, opposed to 1999 when he mailed it in), both were on that level

Lewis was probably a little more physically ready to play as a runner but you put Hurd behind the 97 line and he would've done well.
