How will our defense look next year?

Since the excuse makers say that you can't recover from losing 3 All SEC players and that is the only reason the Defense is bad, 2 of those SEC players won't be back next year and neither will Barnett. Kongbo has done nothing this year and neither has Kyle Phillips. Andrew Butcher was bulked up and moved to DT but had a knee injury.

The backups behind them look to be extremely slow and ill equipped to play big time ball. Are we hoping some of the massive 3-star LB recruits will come in and pick up the slack there?

Based on the backups I've seen filling in for the starters we'll be losing to graduation/NFL I'd say it will look.....slow

Is there a team in the country as decimated with injuries as us? I highly doubt it.

I posted this in another thread, but I think it applies.

I'd like to know why the depth hasn't developed better.

take a look at this.
injuries happen when players are fatiqued, use bad form, and are out of position. But why aren't more of these 3rd and 4th year players ready to contribute?
Gavin Bryant, Dillon Bates are in their 3rd year in the program and even with injuries aren't playing and thus aren't ready.
Austin Smith is the prototypical LB for the SEC and is moved to end and being redshirted after playing last year. Even Bynum, who has a lot of experience and a few starts is not playing. Thig told us that Jacob Johnson was the top rated LB on their board and is now 4th string TE and likely to never see field. And that doesn't even include Bituli who is losing a year of eligibility playing special teams.

Butch burns Tatum's redshirt while 4th year, 4 star lineman Austin Sanders plays field goal unit. Mosley, the biggest lineman on the team, can't find the field.

When is the last time Stephen Griffin played any meaningful minutes?

Kelly earned some touches and what did he get, 1 carry?

What about Osborne? Buchanan has also dissapeared.

Depth has not been developed.

Knowing how much we lose next year, a 10-2 season may be the best that Butch will ever be able to do. Especially when yo consider that we beat app state with a lucky fumble bounce, took down to the wire against Ohio, had to beat a first year head coach with a hail marry, and had one of the worse lose to our biggest rival.

There isn't much evidence to suggest that Butch will bring us a championship.

I think I agree with you on most of these points. I will say though that Buchanan started against Bama I think and Osborne played some, but those guys are true freshman corners so I'll wait on them. But for the most part, I agree that this staff does not know how to manage players. Instead of leaving players at their natural positions they move them to another one and that sets them back a year as they try to get bigger and learn a new position. As you said, Austin Smith is the prototypical SEC linebacker and even started some last year, but what does this staff do? They move him to DE and redshirt him, setting him back while he could be starting at LB this year. I think he'll never really play now. Either Bituli or Blakely is also being moved to DE, he probably won't ever play here because of that. Same with Jakob, he was moved to TE but we have a lot of guys there. He'll never play either and he could be used as an LB. Another guy is Andrew Butcher, who came in as a 4* DE who was beefed up and moved to DT, likely to never play either. I just think this staff is trying to create an athletic, fast defense by moving players from safety to LB (Maybin and McDowell) and LB to DE and it just isn't working well. Causing us to have 3rd and 4th year players who are playing out of position and just not developed correctly. All this moving is setting players back a year or two and it's biting us this year. And yes, before I get killed, I know moving Maybin has worked out. Lastly, I would love to see Griffin get some PT. Many have said he's the most athletic player on the team and can't even see the field. It just frustrates me that we're thin at corner when Abernathy was converted to safety from corner when we could use him this year and that we actually have solid depth at safety with Berry, Kelly, Warrior, and Griffin. Sorry for the long rant.

Results on the field are one thing. Reading some of these comments is another. Honestly when you read some of this stuff it does make you stop and think for a minute. Do you trust your coach 100%? Do you wonder what he is thinking not making staff changes? What is up with our depth chart and guys not being ready? And it all comes down to one thing. We're not coaches for a reason. To much of a damn headache to worry about. My lot in life is to be a fan and complain and vent when aggravation sets in. But love my Vols until my last breath. We are all just searching for answers because we don't understand. We want to win at all cost. You may not like some things you read on here. But we just love our team. And we are hurting for these guys. And it's Alabama. It's been to damn long they have been on this pedestal. Someone got a chainsaw?

I see us getting whipped on both OL and DL for the next couple of years. And you see the result when you play the good SEC teams. Where are any more good OL or DL lineman coming in?

You do realize that luck has a lot to do with winning a championship. Of course, you have to have the right offensive & defensive system in place. You have to have a good roster with quality players. But, not having injuries in key positions and to also have the ball bounce our way at times is contributed to luck.
Very thin line between that. In the A & M game, I can say that any of one play could have caused us to win the game. Rather than a fumble by Kamara on the 3 yard line, either he doesn't fumble or we recover that fumble. That would have been the score we needed to win the game.
bUTch can win a championship.
Do you think Gene Chishik is better at coaching and building a program than bUTch? Gene won a championship at the "Barn".... He had huge, huge luck that season.
My point, is that if you are a top ten team, then there is no way to predict if you can win a championship because once you get to the top ten, then luck is what you will need to get to the chamopnship game.

Nobody. I mean nobody will run the ball on us. JK

First of all, we have 5 games left.

Second, if we're looking at it now, then let's not jump out of windows.

DT - Kmac, Ktut, KVickers, AJ, Picou, Bain, Butcher
DE - Kong, KP, DT, Mixon, Smith, McDaniel
OLB McDowel, Sapp, Bates, Bryant
MLB Kirkland, Jumper, Bituli?
S Kelly, MA, Warrior, Griffin
CB/N Gulden, Osbourne, Moseley, Martin, Buchanan

With injuries gone, and every player bigger, stronger, faster, more experienced ... I believe our D will be pretty good.

nobody has the quantity of quality depth that Alabama has. expecting us to be better than Alabama with as many injuries as we had, and just that Bama is pretty freakin' good is fools gold.

no body wins a war of attrition with Alabama. you wanna know why our back ups aren't as good as Alabama's starters? really?

If we have a slow defense, we will be in trouble. However; our schedule has us playing Georgia Tech, Indiana State, UMass, LSU & Southern Miss.

Safety: Warrior, TKJ, Abernathy, Berry
CB: Mosley(been looking good lately), Buchanan(young but has shown potential), Gaulden, Lots of promising freshman coming in here
MLB: DKJ, Jumper, Butuli?
OLB: McDowell, Berry, Sapp, Bituli?
DE: Taylor, Kongbo, Phillips
DT: Tuttle, Vickers, McKenzie, Johnson, lots of talented freshman coming here

Looks solid to me if we can stay healthy. Lots of backups getting playing time for the future

Don't see how this looks solid considering everyone one of those guys listed played yesterday except DKjr and McDowell and we gave up 600yds, 400 of that on the ground.

Berry was making his first ever start. Kahlil, Vickers both got hurt. So your comment is inaccurate
