How we looking next year?

We obviously need to keep a core of players from this year's team, but there is there a single player on this team that we can't afford to lose? None of the returners can score at a high level. Maybe Brown and Evans just off of potential, but the rest are very replaceable imo.

Front court is solid. Spend the money on guards and a rim protector and we can make run again.
Not sure I agree about the front court. Estrella isn't physical enough and is injury prone. Brown is a smallish 4 with an uncertain offensive game. Carey is physical but not what you'd call consistent. To my eye, he and Brown are interchangeable with Brown being able to make layups. None give you the rim protection that Okpara did. We need help down low.

I have no doubt Barnes will do us right again. With ament probably gone we are going to need some serious guard help true playmakers. Felix will be HARD to replace as rim protector. I think it’s obvious that Barnes physical d serves us well in tourney, but it’s also obvious that when we hit uber talented teams in the tourney, we can’t compete. Barnes can bring in the talent if the NIL checkbook is there. We need to leapfrog in portal if we want to make a higher move. I’m kinda out on over paying frosh. Ament is awesome, but super talented one and done’s really haven’t ever majorly paid off with the way Barnes develops players over 3-4 years.
I agree Ament is most likely gone but honestly, especially after watching how he faired against Michigan, he would do well to stay another year. If that kid ever gets an aggressive streak in him, it's over. I watched every game this year and he seems a bit passive but showed signs of getting aggressive later in the year. Would be fabulous if he came back another year. And getting older seems to work in this NIL world like it did for Indiana in football this year. I could see a glaring difference between the 19 year old Ament vs. the 23 year old Yaxel Lendeborg for Michigan.

If one more person says Estrella is injury prone, sheesh. He had season ending surgery that needed to be done last year. His freshman year and this year he was healthy.
He had a bone bruise in December I think. My daughter had the same injury in HS this year. It takes a bit to recover, a couple months or more. He has not been completely right since the injury, IMHO. There is a lot of pain tolerance involved in being able to play during the recovery period. Hats off to him for only missing a few games and gutting it out. I think a healthy Estrella has a super high ceiling!

Yeah when the Rice player fell into his knee and he missed the next game against Tennessee state. It would be like me saying I broke my ankle once back in college, and now I’m prone to breaking my ankle. So it’s weird to me when people point to his one injury his sophomore year and say “welp he’s made of glass”

Barnes deserves credit for taking 3 straight poorly constructed rosters to the elite 8. He deserves criticism for having AT LEAST 3 straight poorly constructed rosters.

I have 2 hopes.

1. We actually get a well constructed roster that isn’t a combination of interchangeable parts at a couple of positions, with no one really suited for playing the others.

2. Please, please let Jaylen Carey leave.

Come on. He had a 2 guard playing the point and needs another big who can hit layups as well as shots into 10-12 foot range. He needs someone who had a good handle and can drove the lane anD score. He needs a team that can shoot at least 70% of their foul shots. He dioes more with less than any coach in the Nation. Replacing Okpara with equal or better talent is a must,

Estrella seems to get banged up, but he was the one banging and trying to body up with Edey from a few years ago. He was pretty much the best big we had and he was a freshman. Edey had a significant size advantage but Estrella fought as much as the Purdue referees would allow. I gained a lot of respect for him in that game.

Gillespie was playing PG anywhere he went. He played PG at Maryland and Belmont.

He’s inconsistent. He has heart and gives 100%, but he misses too many bunnies and struggles on D.
He has a great low post game and just needs more reps. I can take his defense if he can average 14 and 8. He really hasn’t play all that much ball yet. Has really good offensive skills.

Carey is a bench piece. He is not a make or break and actually was good late in year.
