How we looking next year?

Didn't we have the 3rd or 4th most expensive team this year and lost 12 games and tied with 3-4 teams for 4th in the conference and broke the record for the worse loss in the elite 8 this yr. ? NIL money isn't everything it seems.
I do think this year may have been a little unique because we had to replace so many starters.

I know people say shooters, but you also need a guy or two that can create their own shot when everything goes south.

We need guys that can handle the ball. I'd love to see one or two guys that are pitbulls on the defensive end.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I wonder who transfers out. I’m mostly worried about losing Carey or Evans. They appear ready to be starting for someone next season and making appropriate NIL compensation.

Agree, that's why I use the term scorers instead of shooters when discussing needs. I'd love to have a 3 pt. catch and shoot marksman or two, but nothing stops scoring droughts better than bucket getters, guys who can get their own shot.

Barnes will be back.
Call me what you want, but I got a feeling from the post game stuff that Ament is still thinking about coming back...that could have just been him feeling the pain of loss though.
We are going to have to do some work to keep Estrella - someone like a Michigan, Duke, UConn, etc. will make a hard run at him.

We'll need to replace a couple of pieces, especially with a big body, but I trust in Barnes.
I'll be the first to say that I sat firmly in the camp of "We need to replace Branes sooner rather than later to take that next step", but I'm changing my mind.
I mean I think this year was the worst coaching job he's done here at UT and still took this squad to the E8...until that falls off, I'll back him.

I don't want to lose them either. JC did say today that he wants to be back if the staff wants him back so there's that

man I don't know. Carey can walk IMO if he demands more money or playing time.

and I would need to see more out of Evans before deciding if he can be a real starter on a top tier basketball team.

Evans and Boswell seem like great weapons off the bench.

Bill Self is only like 63 or something believe it or not which is crazy because he’s been around for decades but he probably will retire shortly due to his heart issues last few seasons
If self coaches to 75 he will likely be second to only coach K in total wins, and ncaa tournament wins, maybe third to Roy Williams

I don’t know about the shoulder… hopefully he can recover fully and continue to improve, but otherwise I am optimistic about the potential of Phillips as a contributor in our lineup next season.

Boswell, whatever you think of him, is at the very least one of those signature culture guys under Barnes that is invaluable to the program.

Estrella shows potential, it would be nice if he could have a clean slate injury-free to see what he can do.

The rest I’m more indifferent on as relied upon players. Brown could be a good backup next year, and I even think Henderson looked promising in limited time as another possible backup role next year. I expect Barnes loves Amari’s defense and toughness so I’d guess he’ll be back. But without some offense he’s also a backup role player.

But I don’t really see any major contributors on the roster. Another year filling major needs in the portal.

With Gainey leaving I'd be shocked if a few players don't follow him... Jalen Carey, Boswell, Henderson
Agree - I can 2 of those 3 following Gainey. The other will stick around because playing time will be open.
Thing that concerns me most about Gainey leaving is what current recruits are already committed or close to committing that might follow him to NC St.

Amari Evans definitely has good offensive potential, much more than Mashak and Boswell. He’s aggressive, physical, and can finish. He has the potential of being a defensive stopper that averages 12-15 per game.

I have no doubt Barnes will do us right again. With ament probably gone we are going to need some serious guard help true playmakers. Felix will be HARD to replace as rim protector. I think it’s obvious that Barnes physical d serves us well in tourney, but it’s also obvious that when we hit uber talented teams in the tourney, we can’t compete. Barnes can bring in the talent if the NIL checkbook is there. We need to leapfrog in portal if we want to make a higher move. I’m kinda out on over paying frosh. Ament is awesome, but super talented one and done’s really haven’t ever majorly paid off with the way Barnes develops players over 3-4 years.
When you compare Ament to Knecht Dalton was far more productive and reliable. Ament played like a freshman for the first half of the season and wasn't a factor yesterday. As good as Knecht is he's playing G League now, so you have to ask if that's where Ament will start. I'm just not sure he has enough experience for an NBA game.

There's no way Ament comes back. Imagine if he gets injured again next season? Nah, these players protect themselves and even their agents/managers.

We'll have a really good team that I think will make a good run in the Tournament. Hopefully, Danny and the boosters will bring a little more NIL our way so we can finally get the extra players we need to go and take that extra step to finally getting to the Final Four.
