Long but worthwhile read, IMO:

The question is the most basic one that can be asked to Antone Davis. What exactly is a Vol For Life?

Davis, who has been Tennessee football's Vol For Life coordinator since 2012, knows the answer better than anyone. Still, he laughs when asked.

Then he takes a deep breath. "It's kind of become a loaded question," he said. "The answer, in my opinion, has really been what's made it so special. I'll explain that."

That explanation takes around 10 minutes, with Davis going into detail about where the program began, a crash course of life skills for Tennessee football players, to where it is now, a three-letter acronym in the everyday language of an entire state, synonymous with checkerboard end zones and "Rocky Top."

"There's a lot of meaning behind Vol For Life," Tennessee football coach Butch Jones said last week. "It means so much it took us about a week to really define what a Vol for Life is. It's something that is lived every day. It's something special."

The VFL program is pretty much the only positive thing to come from the Dooley years.

Well, if you read carefully, what Dooley envisioned the VFL program to be was limited compared to what it is now. Dooley just had a good idea that other folks improved and refined. These people would have been here to make refinements had Dooley not been the coach, and if and when the concept came from another source.

So, while still recognizing Dooley for coining the term "Vol For Life" and the very basic intents (which I am fairly sure included shower discipline), the proudest points are the work of others. People who set examples for players to follow rather than believing belittling them to the press would inspire them to greatness.

Deutsch, how did you become a Vol fan? I think it's wonderful that you are, but we don't get many German fans here. Welcome to Volnation!

Wow this Volnation has went global truly global. We have several fans who were fans then moved around the planet. But we have a new fan that's German located in Canada. Awesome. All thanks to Freak for making a site like this.

Where could a redneck in Tennessee speak with a German in Canada?

Well, if they stay with us during lean times, I will be impressed. Some of these folks are jumping in right as the football program is peaking. That is expected. If things go bad, don't block the exits. Time will tell of their loyalty.
