How Tennessee could beat Bama

Griff, I don't see us playing much zero coverage. I think we'll definitely play some cover 1 with Jackson shading Julio Jones and Eric Berry involved with run support. See, when you write blogs such as these that lead to substantive debate without the skewed facts about the defense and the coaching staff being overpaid, I have absolutely no qualms about it. Good blog, Griff.

Fair assessment Griff. We are going to have to be balanced to win this game though. If Kiffin can get Crompton some passes and windows that limit the possible mistakes, we will do well. I am still not predicting anything though.

FWIW, I prefer the Xs and Os stuff...but occasionally I have some other thoughts worth floating....and I try to point out what I think is important. It's not always popular, and not everyone agrees, obviously.

As for zero, it's just an occasional option when the Vols get Bama in long down and distance that can produce some fireworks...

I agree, more cover one than anything else and a lot of doubling Jones

Very good article Griff....I am glad to see you not pouring it on quite as much as you were.

But I am worried about or special teams. Arenas has been hurt but he is very explosive and we are just not very good in kick coverage.

I just hope if we lose it isn't because of our ST.

Griff, why won't Bama let the Vols wear Orange...you need to investigate.

P.S. good insightful write up!

I would just add that given McElroy's inept play, if we we were able to get Bama in a 3rd and long situation, I would drop back in cover 2 or cover 3 utilizing Eric Berry in coverage and make McElroy read the defense, which he has not been so great at the last couple weeks. But I think you are probably right, we will mix some all out blitzes in there as well.

Don't care how we beat em. we just have to beat em. Then all the vols fans can rejoice and celebrate.

we won't double cover jones the whole game... most likely we will shade a safety to his side with rogan or evans one on one.

He did mention UT had to hold its own in the trenches. I'd say that equals to control the line of scrimmage.

Good read, Griff. Solid assessment and some interesting thoughts to chew on. We will definitely have to gamble on both sides of the ball at times this Saturday to have a shot. I'm not worried about Monte having a scheme for Bama and a couple curves to throw their way, but this game will be won in the trenches. If we can get penetration and limit Ingram's YAC, we will force McElroy to beat us and he has yet to show the ability to win a game with his arm, but to be fair he hasn't really needed to. We also need to make something happen on special teams. This would be a perfect week for Oku or Nuke to break one for 6. And we simply CANNOT afford to give up ANY big plays to Bama in the return game. This has the potential to be a classic in this storied rivalry as you can throw all stats, records, etc out the window when it comes to rivalries such as these. Hope to see a hard-fought, classic battle with the Vols coming away with the upset. It'd be a nice signature victory in CLK's young career, and man-oh-man, what a W could do for recruiting...

are at a disadvantage in overall talent...that's why the special efforts required and ingenious coaching....

I'd say UT should match up from a talent standpoint evenly with all remaining opponents except maybe Ole Miss

I feel much better about our odds of "outcoaching" a quality opponent this year than at any other time I can remember.

FWIW, if you take out the 23 (that I could remember, there may be more) non-offensive points scored against us, we'd rank 5th in scoring defense (15.7 pts/gm), about a point per game behind LSU. Considering we've played the #1 and #2 scoring offenses in the league already, I expect that ranking to get even better by the end of the season.

Did you take out the points scored against other teams that were non-offensive?

I think UT's defense is getting better, though...

Didn't click on the spam. What was Griff's strategy for beating Bama?

Lemme guess...outsource the defensive gameplan to Chavis Consulting?

I used Chavis Consulting at my business one year. They were pretty solid in the the first and second fiscal quarters, but once July and the 3rdQ came around, it all went to hell.
