It seemed to work fine during the Memphis game. As Dooley says "as long as the QB gets the ball"

There were a few times during the game that I thought it took too long to get to Bray in the shotgun. Didn't seem to have a lot of zip on the snap.

James Stone did a superb job. It meant a lot to the successes of the offense, though our QBs were hit on several plays. Sure glad we got Mr. Stone instead of Saban.

Stone is going to be a great one. He played great for his first game starting at center., no botched snaps at all, blocked great, seems to know what he is doing out there, and looks the part.

Centers are taught that snap as a backup if it is more comfortable for them. It works just doesnt ever come back in a tight spiral. As time goes on and he gets more used to the center position he might transition into the normal snap you see usually.

Hyams said he hasn't learned to snap right handed, yet. Probably something they work on heavily in off-season

yeah i noticed this during the game. he seemed to be doing it in shotgun as well. i only saw one instance where bray had a small bobble in the snap. I thought Stone played very well, and i can't wait to see him continue to improve. GBO!!

For his first start at center I was impressed. Honestly I don't care how he snaps it as long as it works

Those saying he'll learn the "proper" way next year- He is comfortable and it worked. Why mess with it?

You don't. I played center and if the ball gets to the QB in a way that is comfortable/efficient to both, you leave it alone.

Tullahoma used to snap the ball that way about a hundred years ago when I played against them. Looks weird, but clearly worked on Saturday. I think it made the snap feel more similar to a normal RH snap than a mirror-image LH snap would've felt to the QB. Somehow.

A reason to CONSIDER changing it is that most centers are right-handed. So, your backup center is likely right handed and the third team guy that you're trying to develop is likely right handed, too. So, if Stone continues to snap left-handed and in a manner that's different from all of the other centers, then there will be some amount of adjusting that QB's have to do in practice and possibly in a game. It'd be nerve-wracking to say the least, for Stone to go down, let's say in 2012, when we're driving for the winning score to beat Bama :).

I think we'd all be pretty concerned if the center that we then have to rely on in the heat of the battle snaps it altogether differently than Stone and the QB has to manage that little change in the middle of an already tense/difficult situation.

So, I think they'll evaluate Stone as a RH snapper in the spring when they've got plenty of time to develop/evaluate it. If he can do it pretty well, he'd be fine for the fall and it would eliminate a predictable problem that we might stub our toe on in the future.

FWIW, many lefties are fairly close to being ambidexterous, much more so that right-handers. I'm lefty and know this directly. I can throw a spiral either way, bowl either way, drive a nail either way, etc. Don't know about Stone, but it's very possible that he can pick it up as a RH snapper given a little more time than is currently available.

I think considering the change in the spring, but not now, is perfectly sensible.

^^ This.

I played Center for many years and one thing you never wanna change is how you and the QB work together. One thing a lot of people dont realise is that a center does alot more than snap and block. He is calling the defense, blocking assignments, LB's, blitzes and then he can worry about the snap and block. The first part of his job is the most vital, the last two should be automatic.

I was wondering if anybody else saw that. I rewound to show my wife what i was talking about. i did not know that anyone past little league would snap like that, but hey if it works then more power to him.

Yep... Played long snapper for a year and gripped it similarly with a glove. Did fine all year, then next season I couldn't long snap worth a damn. Who knows why.
