How Much Talent Does Pruitt have to Work With in His First Year?

We don't have elite talent, but we definitely have enough to get to 8 wins this season.

On a serious note. If Spurrier and Cutcliffe can win at Duke then I tend to believe that good coaching ALONE can add two or three wins improvement in a single season
Coaching last year would have given us a Florida, Vandy, Ky and USC win

Jones staff his first year was possibly his best one. They told him he was an idiot and he got rid of them.

Our former HC's tenure could best be described as The Era of the Post Turtle.

When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.

You know he didn't get there by himself, he doesn't belong there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of idiot put him up there in the first place.

The talent cupboard may not be where it needs to be, but it isn't bare, either. With a motivated, knowledgeable coaching staff, who knows how well they'll develop. And besides, the embarrassment of last season should be added motivation for these kids.

GBO!

Great post.

Dang i been on a punning spree. That's not a tragic thing, more like a valium dependency, prob best avoided, if possible.

But post turtle was spot on.

I don't really think Butch was as bad in the player development as people are saying. If you look at a few who went to the Pros, they did fairly well. Some did GREAT. Having said that, I think (no I know) the offense scheme just plan sucked! I don't care how much player development occurred, the offense was going to suck. The main offense we had under Butch was Dobbs making good on busted plays.

Now on defense there might be issues with player development. I really just not sure. It might be if you go back and look at the time the defense was on the field because of zero offense, then you can understand the issues? Anyway, I thinking have a "REAL" X and O guy, instead of a motivational speaker and slogan developer, is really going to help the team this year.

I do think we can and will beat West Virginia...
Ahem, yes he was!

You do know it takes awhile to coach up players who were coached by trash? Have to fix the bad mistakes, install new schemes, and get players that fit said scheme.

We are putting too much emphasis on HS rankings when saying we have talent. Guys that have been in the program for 2-3 years have received subpar coaching, development, and S&C. They are far more likely than other SEC players to have sustained a major injury due to the issues identified earlier. They are now being placed into a completely new scheme (square peg in a round hole).

Not only that even with terrible coaching there are tangible things you want to see that says ok with good coaching this guy could be all-league. I don't recall having a single guy that is returning showing blazing speed to chase down or outrun anyone. Bad coaching doesn't have anything to do with that. Guys filling the wrong gaps and just appeared lost but admittedly a little of that is coaching but a lot is feel of the game.

How the hell can anyone gauge the amount of talent we have on the team, when none of them have had proper coaching or proper S & C time???

We honestly don't know what we have!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's it, exactly.

One of the big mysteries about our team, and one that wont be answered until we start chalking up Ws and Ls. We'll just have to wait to see.

When Pruitt first got here he was surprised how small and slow Tennessee was. I don't see how you could coach that up. Don't know how much you could depend on first-year help from recruiting class.

Lets hope he got them on that Deer Antler spray.

On a side note about team size. I had season tickets during the 15 season and thought the same thing then. I am not a giant guy 6'2 240. Not many dwarfed me as I thought they would. Looked more like a bunch of HS kids honestly.

I think, well I know, Butch was a far better recruiter than player developer/coach. Tennessee's teams under him were best Game 1 of the season and never got any better throughout the year unlike most other teams that do get better. That's evident with him losing to the doormats 3 times.

I hope that Pruit is a coach and can bring out the good in what he has. Judging by the last 2 years giving up 600 yards each to Vandy and losing twice in a row it's hard to imagine the team has much talent ready to go. That said, the right coach can get more out of his players. Bobby Pitrino is obviously one of the best at it. You have to know the average player at Louisville isn't very good at all but he gets all they have available on game day.

If it’s that bad then this is one of the main reasons we will struggle in 2018. You can’t coach size and speed and one off season won’t fix it either.
