Realistically in an off season, how much can we expect for improvement. Will we go from a line that struggled with App Dtate to a group that can push back against Bama? Will it be a more subtle gain in that we won't see a large strength (and speed) change but rather less injury?

I'm hoping he can improve our power and explosiveness. Did we ever replace our Nutritionist that left? I'm hoping some of our younger guys on the oline/dline can make some major weight gains.

Less injury. No injuries to OL because of Strength training. Concussions and knee and Ankles happen Not one can be related to how strong one was. Speed and Explosion happens more with quickness and explosion than speed. Muscle strength and better control of body fat help here. All players can gain in these areas but to how much depends on how blessed one is with ability. When I train kids I never promise any of them I can make them run 40 in 4.4 for backs 4.9 for lineman. There is a limit to each person to how much they increase by what they are blessed by GOD. Now I do tell them I can help you get to what it is you can obtain to. Everyone makeup is different in strength and speed and quickness and Explosion

Strength is a process, it just takes constant effort. I think Vols were on track last year until just after Spring Practice.. Seems like several players kind of went on their own programs May through August and the results show a fail. Hopefully Rock can keep them steady now through fall camp.. If so strength and size can occur.. The old formula used to see players (who needed to) put on 10-15 good solid pounds of muscle mass per year in the first years of good S&C

Speed is a different animal.. Players can improve, but you're either fast or you're not.. Hard to become fast, IMO

I hear everyone is working their tail off. Turning fat into muscle, gaining strength and weight - but being more explosive at the same time.

1% a day, every day.

That's CBJ 101, get with the program.

Nobody will out work us. Said by a true Vol goat. Pat Summit.

Not to sound too cliche but...
it's up to the individual player's desire and discipline.
When that desire to grow in strength and size is so all-consuming
it overpowers the temporary pains of the process of making it happen,
the real gains begin. It becomes a new lifestyle, a lifelong everyday habit that produces the kind of powerful confidence that carries over into more than just athletic performance on the field and into every part of their life for as long as they keep working to make gains happen. Some will want it more than others and those are the same ones who will gain the most benefits. Some only do the minimum to "maintain" and then fall off. If you always strive to gain, you don't have to worry about just maintaining or falling off. Own the results and enjoy what you earn until it's just habit. Everyday lifestyle. You want it more than that Bama player and you work so much harder than him that you can toss him around the field like a rag doll, then that becomes the new normal. Just know he's down there in his gym working as hard as he can to make sure that doesn't happen. Only one team will be the stronger team. The one who wants it bad enough to work hard enough to make it happen. The more you sweat in the gym training, the less you bleed in combat on the battlefield. Visualize the size and strength needed to toss around Bama like rag dolls and see yourself doing the work to get that. Then just do what you see. Own it. It's yours for the taking. You take it and it's yours.

S&C also brings mental toughness and competitive attitude. When your stronger you feel it and you desire to impose your will on the other players. Seems to me we were soft last season.

This is UT we're talking about here. Expectations are better left to other programs.

Every time UT get a new S&C coach everyone gets fired up. The gains you see won't be with the eye test. UT for the last 2 years passed the eye test of what a football team should "look" like. The gains are seen in stamina, staying healthy, etc.

Injuries are still going to happen, that's just a part of the brutal game of football.

No matter how hard someone works in their S&C injuries can happen to anyone at any time.

Go tell JJ Watt that he doesn't work hard enough at his S&C, LOL!

Despite how hard JJ Watt works at his S&C he was still inured and out most of this past season.

I believe our Rock will get our kids where we need them to be but those things never happen overnight.

The OL certainly needs to be in better shape. Butch let the tail wag the dog last year. Team needs a huge upgrade in conditioning across the board. They need to forget about injuries and hit this spring and fall. If folks go down, so be it. Go with what you have. Just make sure this team is in shape and used to being physical. Make damned sure the are fundamentally superior tacklers. Can't do that if all they do is thud or two hand touch during practice. All these surgeries keeping players out of spring ball isn't good news either. IMO those players missed spring. They'll have to earn their jobs back over the summer and fall. No practice....no play. Kinda tired of half the team out for the spring. Team needs a healthy dose of toughness drilled into them.

This.

And I have to add, this is how S&C is geared in the NFL to survive a longer season.

We've got a good one in Rock. Sets the right tone and knows what he's doing. Respect out of the gate.

"You Get Out What You Put In"
"You Sow Sparingly, You Reap Sparingly"

It also depends on what Rock & Butch have for the guys. Each have their own targets, marks and milestones established by Rock & Butch. Some are to shed weight. Some may need to add muscle mass and gain weight. We must consider their dietary requirements that's also set up by the staff. Others need rehab and require a more tailored approach. All require endurance conditioning. I know Rock knows his stuff, he just needs to start implementing the plan for the guys and monitor their progress.

Respect out of the gate? Nope. It's earned. Show me results this fall. Same goes for every member of the staff.

I had wondered the same thing. While everyone was blaming the dismissal of Dave Lawson on our team's seeming lack of strength last season, everyone tends to forget that we also lost our nutritionist who was widely regarded as one of the best in the business. Who replaced her and what kind of reputation does that person have?

Those players with 5* hearts that want to get better will get better. While its easy to blame all of the issues last year on the O-Line due to the S&C issues, it's still the players responsibility to be strong enough not to be consistently blown up by bull rushes from 225-235 pound DEs from Ap State.
