How much better are we with Gerald Jones?

The one mildly disconcerting thing from the UCLA game was the lack of big runs off short catches.

Coach Kiffin says Gerald Jones was our #1 WR by a mile, and I think we all know how agile he is. Denarius Moore was also apparently on the field just to make the participation report.

I just wonder, with how good our offense looked on Saturday... how much better can they be when they get back Gerald Jones?
and secondary to that, when D. Moore is getting to try and burn DBs again?

much better. experienced WR who makes the kinds of catches gerald's made/makes is always very beneficial to an offense.

He will definitely improve it, it may have been posted on here and if it has been I apologize, but has anyone heard if Jones is going to playing Saturday?

Ill take this one ... Gerald Jones makes our offense complete! I just wonder if he is another weapon .... or a diversion so teague can have more catches ...

Any way ... give him six ... Touchdown Tennessee!

If he's really leaps and bounds better than Warren, Hancock and Teague then we will definitely be better with him. For some reason, I feel like those guys aren't all that far behind. I like G Jones, but I've never viewed him as a gamebreaker along the lines of a Meachem, Pickens or Washington. Hope he proves he wrong...

he definately changes the complexion when we have the ball, he can make big plays with the ball in his hands and forces the defense to key on him when he doesn't opening up the other recievers to single coverage. He's always a threat to run from an end around or wr reverse, and gives us added speed to go over the top, shiftyness to break open gains off short passes and not to mention the G-gun (if we decide to use him that way this year). It'll be great to have him back on the field, from what ive heard hes not only a great playmaker but a leader on the field for the offense.

Moore had a catch so he didn't see the field "just to make the participation report."

Jones is a very dangerous guy once he gets the ball in his hands. There is not another WR on UT's roster like him in the open field.

I'd like to think Nuke is in that league. Obviously smaller though.

Chattanooga Times Free Press | Moore's return was boost for Vols

Gerald Jones may not be a Robert Meachem, but almost nobody is... However, I do think he's the one guy we have who is the closest to that sort of catch and run type of receiver.

I feel Gerald's more possession. Meachem could catch the ball and specialized in making the first guy miss the tackle and then picking up even more yards. Gerald at this point seems to more make clutch catches than get big YAC

Jones is a lot stronger and he doesn't have fumbling issues.

I don't see how Nuke has fumbling issues because he had trouble on punt returns. That has nothing to do with running after the catch and open field ability. I also don't see where Jones' strength makes him more dangerous in the open field. Percy Harvin didn't have that strength. It's not like we're talking about TO or Randy Moss.

I'm a Gerald Jones fan, but he's done nothing more than show a few flashes of what he's capable of. His career thus far is similar to Meachem's in the way that we KNOW he's capable, but hasn't shown it. Last year wasn't his fault because of our terrible QB situation.

I'm just anxious to see what he is going to do if he can get healthy this year. I don't care how good he does in practice. That doesn't mean much if he isn't putting up the numbers. Or isn't even getting on the field.

I meant from an elusiveness standpoint Nuke should be right there with Jones. I did concede he gives up some size. (strength)

Hopefully fumbling won't be a long term issue.

You can't have possibly seen Harvin and believe that.

Looks aside he was top five among WR's in the bench press at the combine. I'm not knocking Jones in the least but to describe Harvin as anything less than a superlative athlete is silly.

I think he was probably referring more to practice reports on Nuke.

To be fair though, Harvin was all that big as a true freshman either. I think he played HS ball right around 170. He was not that strong when he first got to UF. That being said, you are right about him being a freak of an athlete. He made plays in HS games that just didn't seem possible.

Both Scout & Rivals had him listed at 188 coming out of HS. Maybe it's just how he's proportioned or something but for whatever reason lots of people have always thought he was smaller than he really was. (FYI his NFL Combine weight was 192)

Scout.com: Percy Harvin Profile

That shows him as 178 as a FR as UF. But mainly I was basing it on seeing him play in person a few times his SR year in HS.

....dropping one punt doesnt really give someone "fumbling issues". It just means they don't need to be playing special teams (at least at that point)

If I was 165 lbs (generous) and trying to catch a punt with 200+ lb guys bearing down on me at full speed, I'd likely have fumbling issues too.
