I know there's so many variables here but assuming we snag a proven coach, what shape do you feel UT football is in? How soon do you feel we could pull out wins over FL or even Bama and make a run for the east?

Under Gruden, we are competing for the SEC East next year. and in 2 years for the National Championship.

The recruits will flock to Chucky!!

UNlike Spawn's unbridled retardedness we are 2 to 3 years away from being a top 20 team on the regular with a good coach.

Just a good coach away. They can develop the talent we have a bring more in. Think Bruce Pearl, he made our players better and we won fast but football will take two years.

With a proven NFL coach - 1-2 years.

With a proven NCAA coach - 2-3 years

With any other NCAA coach or recycled Vol Coach - Never

So essentially 2-3 years away from 8-9 win seasons, which isn't unreasonable. I think a different set of coaches could've pulled off 9 wins with this years team. We should've beaten miss. st and either UGA or FL along with the other "supposed to win" games like mizzou vandy etc

We could have been this year, your right. We were ranked at one time until Dooley and the coaches failed to make second half adjustment against FL.

I don't have enough fingers to count how long. Just kidding . It really depends who leaves early this yr and who the the coach is.

It all depends on this next hire.

If we get a slam dunk hire (i.e. a Gruden, Petersen, or Patterson) I think we're back in 2-3 years.

If we get a proven winner, up and comer from the mid majors (like a Butch Jones), then I still think we can be very competitive with everyone in our conference in 3 years.

If we get one of these old guy retreads (a Tuberville, Butch Davis, Cutcliffe, etc.) that I keep hearing about on the radio, then I think we'll be Colorado. We might have a decent year here or there, but we won't be relevant overall for the rest of the decade.

I feel like we can be in the running for the east next year if we get a great coach, and our players adjust as needed.

I think we can play with and beat Flor, UGA, and SCeast in the next few years. Under a good coach, they're not that much ahead of where we are right now. Bama, under Saban, however will still be really tough to beat no matter who we have. But hopefully we can get there

Yep, exactly. The thing is, people are saying the offense is so good because of Dooley (or atleast that's his main accomplishment) but isn't it true that most if not all of our junior studs are Kiffin recruits that Dooley just managed to get to stay on? Dooleys recruiting classes haven't been bad, but pale in comparison to UGA, FL, LSU, Bama, etc

With a top hire? 2-3 years before we're are competing for the conference. We are a sleeping giant, we just need to be awakened.

Consider who said coach would have to compete against for the foreseeable future: Muschamp, Richt, Saban, Spurrier, and some combination of Sumlin, Miles, Mullen, and who knows who shows up at Arky, Auburn, and UK. (Franklin is a non-event against even a mediocre coach.)

With decent recruited talent and a decent hire, at least 2 years. A bad hire, no chance ever against the murderer's row that is the SEC.

Depends on Bray, Patterson, and Hunter.

With them coming back and a competent defensive coaching staff, they could go 9-3 next season.

Florida, Oregon, and Alabama are the toughest games on the schedule. Count them as losses.

Austin Peay, S. Alabama, W. Kentucky, Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn, and Missouri should be wins.

Georgia and South Carolina are toss ups.

One thing Dooley did for himself was set up a bunch of cupcakes for the next few years to try and pad the win column.

I highly doubt those three come back so all bets are off though. No idea whether we have a starting caliber QB next season and it all starts there.

I agree that Hunter does not come back and Patterson probably will not if his grades are in questions. I think Bray will come back if the right coach is hired so he can improve his draft stock.

Oregon and Bama are tough, the others could be a toss up with the right coach and defense.

With Gruden, 2 years to compete for SEC

with Stoops, Patterson, Petrino (hope not), Peterson, and MAYBE Strong, 3 years to competing for SEC

Any assistant coach, who knows. Anywhere from 3 years to 6-7 if they get the can and get replaced.

Of course, this is JMO

It's amazing to me how so many people are still thinking Gruden will come here. I will gladly be the first one to eat crow over it, but he ain't coming. Let it go.
