Kenny Hyder is my fathers name. Some players in his class were Wayne Phillips, Jimmy West and Donnie Colbaugh. Jerry White was 2 years ahead of my dad. White played at South Carolina for a year before transferring to ETSU.
My dad was a pretty good ball player. He made all-conference as a junior and senior. The team his senior year started out 18-0 and were ranked number 1 in the state for awhile. I think they finished 26-4. That Bulldog team made it to the final 16.
Steve Spurrier was 1 year older than my dad and played at Science Hill. My dad's teams went 3-1 vs Spurrier during the 61-62 & 62-63 seasons. He loved that Hampton was a small school beating up on Spurrier's "big city" school. I think my dad always had to think back to those wins for a little bit of comfort after some of the big W's Spurrier has put on the Vols.
