How many more years should Fulmer get to win another SEC championship?

this is actually a good question. knowing that we probably won't realisticaly be a true contender in 07, but that we'll probably have another season like 06 (8-4/9-3) he probably won't be fired or quit after tha either....

and that's not because of anything other than that's just where we are right now talent and experience wise, this question really makes it difficlut for anyone that a)wants change and b) wants to be in the SEC title mix for real.

To me, i say two. and i say that because i really do think that in 08 we could be really really good. I just don't see it next year. and in 09, we cycle back around to a pretty tough schedule both road and home wise. in 08, we go to UCLA, GA, SC and Auburn, with home games against Bama, FL and NCSU. this recruiting class should be ready to contribute, Crompton will step in likely as the starter and all the guys we have question marks about 07 will be fully engrained in to the system. sets up well for that year.

and Fulmer will be around for both seasons....so, i say 2 with the eye on the prize being in 08.

I still think we should be in the mix in '07. Once again, it all depends on the Florida game, and I'm not ready to write that one off as un-winnable yet.

in the mix and being a true contender are two different things in my mind. we were in the mix this year, but i think it was prett clear we weren't a real contender for the SEC.

and no game is unwinnable in January...i do realize that. but looking at it, based on what i know, we play 'em down there, they are the defending national champs etc, etc, etc....i'm going out on a limb and saying that's a game that we probably shouldn't win.

can we? sure. but when i look at the schedule, if i had to pick a game that i felt was the most likely to lose, FL is the one. Just like i look at the schedule and say which is the one we are most likely to win, and i will usually say Vandy. can we lose to vandy? sure.

same rationale.

Yeah, I know, but somebody's gotta hold O2's feet to the fire, and even the Mod's have been letting him run rampant here lately.

I just like pulling his rope once in a while.

:)

Letting me run rampant? LOL.

Aside from telling you how unimportant you are to me, I have posted my feelings on Phil in one thread since the Outback Bowl. I hardly find that as "running rampant".

As for holding my feet to the fire, you're about as good at that as you are assessing what this football program needs in a leader. That is, you suck at it.

In 2 years, UT will have went 10 years without an SEC championship. Thats a good benchmark. If you can't win an SEC title in a decade the program slid to far.

That would be 16 yrs for Fulmer as HC, 2 SEC titles, 1 NC, both cominge 10 years ago. I think it would be time for Fulmer to retire and spend all that money he's made.

SC has a top 10 recruiting class this year, Saban is back at Alabama. I can see Fulmer struggling with both of those teams. Florida coming off an NC and GA will continue to give Fulmer fits.

Fulmer's at a crossroads in my mind. He either wins an SEC championship by 08 or he's done.

OklaVol, I totally agree about this team being at a crossroads. C-Fulmer has big pluses, but also big minuses. Top recruiter at a University where you have to be a great one, not a good one. Good organizer, and loyalty, but loyalty is one of his faults also. Hanging on to coaches to long. I know that I am going to hammered on this, but I believe that the defense nees some new blood. Young, aggressive . Tennessee is a national name, and lot of that is because of the work of Coach Fulmer, but a national name is a long way from being a national power. Just one man's opinion.

you know when cutcliffe was here before as oc bthe problem was more the defense, particularly the secondary. hopefully with someone replacing slade the secondary improves.

That would be a great start, and I like Coach Chavis, but his teams over pursue, not very good tacklers, and have never been very solid against option type offenses. The spread option is getting more and more prevalent. But hell, I would be happy with a new db coach.

If he doesn't win the SEC this year it's over! Too many SEC teams coming on strong. Bama is still pissed at Phil and with Saban there now, Phil's time is short!
