How many positions need to be upgraded before going to the SEC championship?

For example: I think we are 4 key players away

A top notch RB
DL (which I hope McCullers proves to be)
A ball hawk safety
A great run blocking center

IMO if we are able to fill these positions with high quality athletes we would be a top competing team.

This thread idea spawned from a conversation I was having with hypotheticals. The hypothetical was how many NFL players would you have to add before they would win a National Championship. (my theory was 3) get a RB and two OL and the offense would score so much it wouldn't matter

I think safety and offensive line play in general will be better next year. I think we're just a RB away. Lane, if healthy, could be that guy if we can land Borque and Hill is ready. That would give us two change of pace backs to compliment him in different ways.

So you are saying we are 1 player away?

We're still one recruiting class away. Remember our seniors this year will be Kiffin's first crop of recruits and we all know how that class turned out. The 2013 season will be the first in a long time in which we will be playing with a full deck of cards.

Right now we are upgrading talent (not difficult to accomplish based on what Dooley was left to work with) and have yet to land those splash guys. Our offense has major potential this upcoming year if Hunter returns to his old form. No doubt we need a dominant RB. But we need a guy who can take control
of a game on both sides of the ball and that's one thing this program has been
missing for awhile. EB was a difference
maker. We need guys to step up and
take control of this team.

I understand we've signed big name guys recently (JJ, Nuke, BB)... However Dooley recruits guys who arent a major risk off the field, so when he does land that first "Big Fish" hopefully he won't be gone in a year or two for holding up the gas station that our biggest booster owns.

Easiest answer is this: how many of our starters would start for either Alabama or LSU?

I'd say 3 out of 22. Bray, Hunter, and Rogers. Would say Malik, but he's gone.

We are a loooooooooooong way from 'there'.

This. Its not just about filling spots with great talent. Gotta have DEPTH at each position too. One of the major reasons we hung with the best teams in the country for a half the last 2 years but fade in the 3rd quarter.

i agree with this. its not about a player here and there. we have talent at the skill positions. To be a champion in the sec you have to have depth on the lines.we have had none

You CAN'T be serious? Why, cause they have more stars when they come out of high school? Marcell Darius wasn't a 5star.. It's all about developing talent and schemes.

Many of our player would be in the rotation there. Good try, but that isn't the forumula thatnwere looking for here .

On the offensive side, with good health, I think we are only a true stud tailback away from being a great offense. Our wide receivers are great, tight end is really good, QB is great, the line is massive and will be excllent...lots of quality depth on the line. Fullback ia acceptable. We just need Tom SMith, Marlin Lane or one of the new recruits to become a top flight tailback.

The defense is so full of holes, hard to know where to start. AJ & Curt are good at the outside linebackers. Hopefully that Herman can fill the middle. In the defensive backfield, I like Brewer. The rest needs improvement. The defensive line has lots of room for improvement. To play at the top level, you really need 8-10 guys up there. Sentimore and McCullers are nice JUCO additions that will fill two spots. Couch is good. Need improvement from J. Smith & Miller. Need several others to step up on the DL...Hood, etc.

With a good special teams coach, I think Palardy and Darr will be ok in the kicking game.

So to answer your question, I think we are 4-5 players short. Hopefully some guys are going to step it up this winter & spring.

Depth and having a plan when injuries occur is another topic.

Dooley's first class next couple years will show what he has done beyond damage control. GBO:loco:

Better throw a lockdown CB or 2 in the mix

guards that can get to the other side of the line quickly (when they pull on runs)

Fullback thats a great lead blocker

I think the RBs are better than what was coached out of them last year. Chaney is not a RB coach. Rajon needs to be moved back to TB permantly. He has the size and speed.

One more good class after this one and the roster is top tier SEC quality. It then becomes totally player development, scheme, play calling and game management. I don't see how anyone can say we do not have good talent already. The recruiting classes were really good the past two years as well as this one coming up. The question has been whether the coaching staff could develop and scheme as good as Bama, LSU, the Barn, Arky, etc. I see this coaching turnover as Dooley's second chance to get it done right with the coaches that can get it done.

I think more than the players now its the attitude. When a team has been down for a couple years or more there can be a haze that hangs over the team that expects less than championships. Maybe playing close is enough - that has to change.

My brother in law made a very similar point to yours. He said get a NFL quality center and guards the offense would be unstoppable. Neal and Lane would be able to run and Bray would have all day and that would give O Line depth
