How many 2016 scholarships are available?

I say there are 79 scholarship players right now with 13 of them being seniors so 66 scholarship players heading into next year.

85 man roster limit
85-limit implies we currently have room for 19 barring any more departures, which isn't true.

25 per signing class
I am assuming we only have two blue shirt players that count towards the 2016 class (Young and Perry). If that is true, then we can sign 23 players to this class not counting any blue shirts that count towards the 2017 class.

There is no way to pin down an actual number because of attrition and blue shirting. My guess is we sign 22-24 this class.

A while back, Hubbs said we would sign 18... then that grew to 21 with the loss of Swafford (scholarship), Bruce and Oliver (both blue shirts) before the start of fall camp. Multiple sources have said we'll sign 21-22 in 2016. We're unlikely to sign more, with the 2017 class being so loaded.

Same thing I've heard but from a different person. No idea how swafford wouldn't count though. I would love to hear the rational there but that is what I've heard.

I can't recall the specifics-- and it's been a while back-- but others confirmed that 21 was the target. It was also said that some of the current recruits will go elsewhere as new ones come on board. Not surprising, given the talent available in 2017.

That would be the 2015 class then...no problems.

That is correct. I'm not sure how Swafford opens up a spot.

From all that I'd heard/read, there were 7 blueshirts for this 2015 class. With Bruce/Oliver gone, that means we have 5 remaining that will count towards next class. If one of those 5 went on scholarship before this fall, taking Swafford's spot, does that mean they no longer have to be forward counted and can just be a counter to the '15 class? If that's the case, then the 21 means only 4 BS remain counting towards 2016.

Or, if there's a scholarship lost due to medical issues, does that allow us to backcount into that scholarship?

I don't know if any of this is possible. Where's Leb when you need him!?

We will load up in 2017 another class like the 15 class NFL talent in bunches will make there way to KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE, this class will be the class that shows the country that TENNESSEE IS BACK TO STAY.:clapping:

Eventually, we will have a full roster and quality depth. At that point, it is not likely that top notch recruits can come here and reasonably expect early playing time.
We have been selling "Early Playing Time" for a couple of seasons and it has worked.
When that ends, we will still have some good recruits but not as many as now.
Look at "Bama" and Southern Cal. You have to wait years to even get a shot at playing on special teams on those programs, much less to be a starter.

If Swafford counted against 2015, maybe Zach Stewart's unused blueshirt is what gets us to 21. We can take 18, Bruce/Oliver/Stewart don't sign papers so that puts us at 21 spots for 2016. Stewart can enroll in 2016 and be counted against 2017-- assuming he makes it to UT at all.

22 if we use a blue shirt, i called coach last night and he told me not to post it but you VOL NATION are my brothers so i cant lie to you:eek:lol: Nobody on here really knows they might tell you so but they dont, i dont know even if coach Jones knows at this point, its a long time before NSD, BUT GUESSING I WOULD SAY BETWEEN 20 AND 22. We just need to fill our major needs with this class and not worry where we are ranked we need O-LINEMEN AND D-LINEMEN, THATS WHERE IT IS WON AT, not the pretty boys we need BIG MEAN UGLY NASTY RECRUITS IN THIS CLASS WHERE WE DONT GET CAUGHT HAVING TO START FRESHMEN ON THE OL.

No idea about the number 22 but I for sure agree with the needs assessment. We need to OWN the line of scrimmage without being absolutely forced to play freshmen.
