The bigger question is: Do you believe Tennessee will win a NC under Dooley. Because if Dooley is here to stay, it might be a while. Dooley might turn out okay, but he will probably not bring a championship to Knoxville.

It really doesn't take much to all of a suddenly become a contender. Look at how Auburn did it. Who knows how we come out next year, we should have solid starters on both sides of the ball, and everyone should know the Offensive and Defensive schemes and playbooks.

Sept 1 - NC State*
Sept 8 - vs. GA State
Sept 15 - vs. Florida
Sept 22 - vs. Akron
Sept 29 - @ UGA
Oct 6 - Bye
Oct 13 - @ MS State
Oct 20 - vs. Alabama
Oct. 27 - @ USCe
Nov. 3 - vs. Troy
Nov. 10 - vs. Mizzou
Nov. 17 - @ Vanderbilt
Nov. 24 - vs. UK

I'm pretty sure this is what our schedule is going to look like (saw it on tos) and with a healthy season i can see an 11-1 year potentially. 9-3 is more realistic but thats not the standards i believe we should be living up to. We have the talent on offense pardon injuries to put up points on anybody, and the Defense is only going to get better with another year under Wilcox. I'm excited. GO VOLS!

NC in 2012 is not impossible (if key players stay healthy and few lucky breaks to offset all the horrible things that have happened over last couple of years).
It is certainly not impossible to imagine beating Bama (somewhat weaker than last couple of years) and Florida at home and UGA (our toughest game next year) and SC on the road - not easy but not impossible either). All other games should be no problem if we play up to our abilities.

Never. A team outside of a talent-rich recruiting state will never again win a national title.

You're an idiot he's talking about the times that both coaches are their, not the time in between.

how many coaches and 2-3 years did Bama go thru before they won a championship, you idiot? We're only 2 coaches removed and 3 years out. You want to follow Bama's plan of success, we'll be there when you're finally graduating high school.

I take your response as a compliment (coming from a gator). Anyhow we shall see what happens and it will be interesting to watch. The game I worry about the least next year (among the four big ones I mentioned) is UF - you will continue your slide for a few more years and very likely go through similar patch that UT has just gone through (as if that is not already happening).

People would have said the same thing about Alabama in the mid-2000s, or LSU in the late '90s. You never know.
I'm pretty certain that I know. Do you know how many things have to line up in order to win one? We have Dooley as a coach. He can't even get his squad lined up most of the time. Let's be real.

Shouldn't we get a real head coach before we pose this question?

Honestly can the most delusional Dooley supporter see this staff taking a team to the National Title? At this point, Joker Phillips is a better bet to win it all.

Next year we will get the answer - and if things don't go well Dooley will be out (because he will have 3 years of coaching his own prized recruits - Bray, Hunter, Rogers as well as highly recruited offensive line) - so there will be no more excuses of being too young, inexperienced etc.
Having said this I think chances are high that Dooley will succeed (even he does not win NC he will probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 9-10 win season which should be enough progress to keep his job).
Also, I think even this year if people want to be honest there have been signs of hope (the only time we had a complete team against a good opponent we killed them - Cincinnati). Even in games we got blown out we were always in the game at halftime (means preparation and schemes were good so credit to coaching). The open question remains halftime adjustments - it did not seem coaching staff did well in this area but I will not write them off quite yet - let's see what happens now that players are older and more mature (and hopefully key players stay healthy).

Who said it had to be with Dooley? LSU and Bama had to fire their coaches, but quickly ascended towards the top. If we hire a top coach - and rest assured, we'll spend huge bucks to make sure that happens - then you never know, it could happen sooner rather than later.

If we don't win enough next year new coach will probably be hired (along the lines you suggest in terms of expensive etc).
I personally hope that Dooley makes it. He does so many things well and represents this university with class so I would rather see him win and get the recognition he deserves for all the hard work he put in. If we do really well over the next couple of years he could stay at UT for a very long time because he has the SEC background, embraces the UT tradition, and understands that this is a destination job (like his father did for UGA - this is by far the best scenario for us as opposed to getting some current hot shot coach who would not give a damn about UT long term).
