How long should we give Pruitt?

Not in today’s world it doesn’t. The best kids want to go to the school that gives them the best shot at the league and to win, demonstrate that and with our facilities a good coach can turn it around in 3-4 years. Been done in other places.
No, not a true down program. Not a sustained successful program.

What programs do you think became sustained national powerhouses over night after a decade of failure other than Saban at Alabama?

Speaking of which, did y'all hear Derek Barnett is starting this season in Philly and added a new move to his repertoire? Read that in a news article this morning. Tennessee players are successful at the next level, recruits. I mean you can watch them start in the NFL on Sundays when just two or three seasons ago they were starting here at Tennessee on Saturdays just like you will.

Just about every great coach shows it in year 2.

“Middle of the pack” to “good” coaches show in year 3-4.

You’ll know what this guy’s made out of by the end of next season.

It's not so much a give up question as it's a others opinions on when do we expect returns. Whats fair and what's not. It's a thread to figure out what's justified and what's not. Obviously one game shouldn't dictate how he is as a coach.

Then change the question. Instead of all the negative connotations of “how long do you give Pruitt” try something like “how long of a rebuild job is this” or “how long until you expect to see true improvements”.

The negativity—whether real or implied—with our fan base is disheartening.

Yes. You'll notice that I asked you for clarification based on it too and thought it was too early to ask that.
What you didn't know was that I hadn't even read the posts before I posted because I was just replying to your thread.
When I went back and read previous replies, they all pretty much said the same thing I did.
I can't remember how you edit your thread title but you should be able to, I think.
It would eliminate that confusion from the ambiguous wording and it would save you the headache from having to hear
about it again the next time someone new to seeing the thread posts. LOL.

Dumb thread is dumb. Pruitt should get his contract length, lets try that since we haven't let a coach do that in a while. I would like to not have to pay interns and OC's at other schools head coach pay while they aren't here for a change.

We'll probably never have a coach run out his contract again. The world has changed.

Used to be the way you're thinking. But some time ago (decades, maybe?) some smart agents started making a compelling case: a coach with less than a couple of years on his contract is disadvantaged recruiting, because they players won't believe he'll be there by the time they're seeing the field.

So contracts started getting extended every time they got within 2-3 years of running out. Extended for another year if the coach is on or near a hot seat, extended for two, three or more years if he's doing well. But always keep the "end of contract" date far enough in the future to reassure recruits.

So, yeah. We're never gonna see a guy play out his full contract again, quite possibly.

4 to 6 years

4 years, just to get his guys in there, his system going with his guys, and to get the entire culture changed. Up to 6 years, if there is noticeable improvement, in all aspects............even if the wins aren't exactly what we want. However after 4 years, if the culture is still not changed, and there is little to no improvement or you see bad regression then he should go.

This would be subject to change (just as any job) if circumstances arose (like cheating, criminal activity, ect.)

What's the big deal? There are threads on every conceivable subject on VN. Why is CJP's timeline sacrosanct?

Why do we need a timeline after an expected loss to a much better team during the first game of this season. If they don't look significantly better against Florida after two scrimmages, then maybe it would be warranted. Why do we need to even think about how long should we give him/them?

West Virginia OC Jake Spavital: 'You can see Pruitt is going to turn that program around'

By: Dan Harralson | September 1, 2018
CHARLOTTE — West Virginia offensive coordinator Jake Spavital’s offense totaled 547 yards in a 40-14 win against Tennessee.
West Virginia had a 13-7 lead at halftime and Spavital’s offense started slow against Jeremy Pruitt’s defense early on.
“They are a solid team,” Spavital said of Tennessee following the game. “You can see that he (Pruitt) is going to turn that program around. He just needs a little more time”
Spavital said that West Virginia being a mature team played a difference in the game.
“We were a very mature team that came into this game,” he said. “Where Coach Pruitt’s at, he is very sound and a tough defense and caught us off-guard in the first half.
“If they keep playing complimentary football, it’s going to be a tough team to beat because they minimized our possessions at the beginning. Once that happens, they can run away with a lot of games.”

We kept jones, way toooooo long-but the number of years isn't as important (to me) as no BS improvement year after year, based on the only criteria that matters, W-L record. Remember, those idiots that couldn't yell loud enough (and often) about how Great a recruiter jones was-anything but the W-L record is noise, usually to cover up the poor W-L record. CP is a proven winning coach, I'm more than willing to give him a fair chance, and hoping he'll get the job done. He has been give the worst UT team in modern times (maybe of all time), I don't expect a naty this year, but I do expect him to get us off the champs for life BS, and on to being Champs in Football- as he was hired to do.

Fodder for discussion. What we do here doesnt effect games, or AD decisions.

You keep him forever unless UT Administration shows they can attract and vet quality candidates. Admin should have opportunities to show their abilities to make hires in other sports before/if the football coach needs to be replaced

Honestly I've seen a lot of different opinions. I'm just curious how many years and why that long. What expectations do you have over these years? We didn't start out great but I do see a lot of positive coming from Pruitt. A lot of characteristics that over time could mold a solid football team. So how long do you give him before you jump off the bandwagon?
Dumbest thread of the year. You win!!!
