How long has it been since...?

That pick 6 ripped out my soul. Didn't think that game would be the last time we were in Atlanta for almost a decade.

Oddly, I didn't feel as bad about that loss as I did in 2001. In 2001 we WERE the better team and we should've won that one going away but we crapped the bed. However in 2007 LSU was clearly the more talented team. I was proud of our team on that day. We fought them tooth and nail all the way to the end. We played hard, we played physical, and we took the fight to them. We actually outplayed them I felt. In the end they just had more playmakers than we did.

Don't know about talent but drive and motivation is what I have seen lacking since the early 2000's. I can see and hear the drive and self motivation in this team. Great things are coming!

I've said it before, but I can only think of one time when Butch and company really put a lackluster, non motivated performance on the field and that was Missouri in year 1. Since then they've come out and played their sacks off every time they've been on the field.

I agree that was easily the most talented Tennesseee Team that I have ever seen.

UT Football has NEVER been the same since blowing the lead to LSU in the second half of the SEC Championship game!

The beginning of the revival of LSU football and the beginning of the downfall for Tennessee football.

We were posed to lose that game in 2007. Our team played great. Ainge didn't look so hot. I'm goin off of memory so I'm sure I'm wrong but seems he had only taken a few sacks all yr but he took 2-3 in that game, threw one straight to a tiger sumhow. Just wasn't himself but the team around him played great. Vs sabans tiger in 2001 we were clearly the better team coming in and had already beat them and I knew we would come back any min and just never did. That was one of the sickest moments I've had as a Vol fan. 2007 I was a lil hurt just because I knew as well as the team played if Ainge would've played up to his normal self we beat them.
That was a wierd year. Ky and Ar both beat lsu and lsu was still the best team in the country.

We've entered the season without significant holes in a major position in terms of depth, experience, or talent?

I'm casting my mind back, but I really cannot even remember, unless we go back to the 90's, a time when I was this realistically optimistic about a season.

Probably 2001, maybe 2006. This year our depth problems will be DT, LT, WR, and MLB. If KMac or DK Jr. goes down then we are in for a bad season. Same if Richmond can't perform at an elite level. P. Will is the only WR I would trust right now but we did ok last year with a subpar passing game

If memory serves, both of those losses came late in the season and LSU was pretty injury riddled. Honestly, that's part of why we played so well against them in the SEC Championship game.

Well I know ark was their last game. They went 3 ot's on like a Friday nite and the next nite (i think) we went 4 ot's with ky and won. I do believe Lsu's Ky loss was earlier in the year but I cud be wrong. Your prob right bout the injuries. I'm not sure. Way too many games/seasons run thru my feeble mind. Lol

Thinking of that game still hurts badly to this day. Watching Matt Mauck running all over the place still gives me nightmares! Lol.

Perrywinkle their 2nd string didn't beat us, it was the damn ints we threw in the 4th.

Yeh that Miami team was very good, if we had made it to the rose bowl, the Cains would've jumped higher.

I can't stand Miami and still happy that we kept them from a National Championship and we have beat them 2 out of the 3 times we played them.

The first came in early/mid October, and at the time Kentucky was ranked around 17th.

The second came at the end of the regular season, and I think that's also when their starting QB got injured.

It probably helped that both losses were in triple overtime, but in reality it was also just a really weird year. And after the championship game, LSU jumped from 7 to 2 in the final week although 3 of the teams above it didn't lose, partially because ESPN felt they should be the team playing in the national title and made a big 48 hour push for it.

But it was just a weird year / a mess of a year to begin with. To truly emphasize how much so, when Kentucky played South Carolina in the beginning of October, that game was the #8 team in the country vs the #11 team in the country (and both ended the season unranked).

Yes it was a wierd year. I was thinking LSU's loss to KY was earlier in the year but my memory is not to be trusted. KY wasn't horrible that year. They took us to the wire in 4ot's with a pretty decent UT team fighting for the east crown. My fav part of that game and I dont even remember who made the reception was in like the 3rd ot we got flagged for some bs call and had to start the drive closer to midfield and Ainge was like, alright azzhole's, and threw a strike on the 1st play for a td. Wish I remember who caught it. The KY fans sitting close to me didn't like me after that play and we had gotn along so well before that. I got a lil too excited! Lol
