How important is an AD anyway?

If Blackburn convinced Appy State to leave the conference then yes he influenced it. If not, then it more the result of the competition in the conference getting weaker.

Bottom line is that he took over about the time that ASU was moving out and moving up.

Lol. So, one team, App State, leaving the conference led UTC to a 4-year average record of 9-4 after Blackburn, as compared to a 4-year average record of 5.75-5.25 before Blackburn? Damn, how many times did they play App State every year before David got there? 3 or 4 times?

Also, you really should do your homework before making false claims like "if Blackburn convinced App State to leave the conference, then he influenced it".....fact is, UTC and App State only played once with DB as UTC's AD, in 2013, and UTC beat App State, went 8-4 and shared the Conference Championship, while App State went 4-8 ....... and then won it outright the next year, going 10-4 when App State moved on to the Sunbelt. So your statement was about as false as it could possibly be.

20 years later lets devalue an undefeated, national title season. Riiiiiight.

I'm not devaluing an undefeated national championship season. I'm glad it happened.

Simply asking what Fulmers claim to fame would be if Arkansas doesn't fumble.

Edit: Quoted wrong post......

Why is CPF good fortune held aginst him. He had several teams capable of a natty and had bad luck. No team wins a natty without some good luck. I am not saying he is the best coach ever. He was very good, all things considered. Recruiting is just as important as developing players.

Never once did I hold the Arkansas fumble "against him".

Just curious of what he'd be known for if that doesn't happen?

Answer? The true decision on having an average, good, or great athletic department. Yes, the admin overall has to 'buy in' but a great AD knows how to work the channels (Admin,Alum/Boosters,Staff) to get what they need. A great AD can also persuade the best coaches to come and with a good deal for the University.

Recent hires-was the right hire made?
Butch instead of Gundy, Strong, Cut, and Gruden.

Dooley instead of Sumlin, Kelly, and Cutt.
Cutt was offered the job but couldn't bring his coaches, wanted to keep some coaches instead of paying their buyout (enter DD).

I still think Cutcliffe would have won, and won big as HC. Not flashy and I understand that but Tn won at a very high level with him, dropped without him, then went back up on his 2nd trip. OM fans still miss him, he won at OM (the right way).

Good news is DB has overseen some of UTC's biggest success. Football is doing better than I can remember. It's been decades since they were good. Maintained high UTC bball teams (women and men) and kept UTC's wrestling teams with opportunities to remain a top team in the country. He "gets it".

Two hires above, who would you have picked?

Given that you just touched on less than five percent of an AD's responsibilities, your point doesn't carry much weight. An AD manages all athletics, maintains a budget, and most importantly keeps the AD in compliance with Title IX. It is a sizable job.

it's a moot point. there's not very many national title seasons that don't have games or plays that happen like that.

97 Nebraska, took an incomplete pass, kicked up in to the air in the end zone, tip drill TD to beat MO on their way to a national title.

01 Miami had a 90 something yard fumble recovery for a TD against freakin' boston college to win that game, on their way to a national title.

02 Ohio State needed PI in the endzone to extend the game to win a national title.

2010 Auburn had to kick a game winning FG to end the game against freakin' KY. and they had that 24-0 comeback against Bama that year to boot.

and i'm sure there's plenty of other "what might have beens" i'm missing.

but long story short. i don't care. we won.

Hall of fame coach who was 99 games over .500 instead of 100? Kinda not fair to single out one game over 16 years imo.

It was two teams. App State and Georgia Southern both went FBS . There has been a definite reset of the SoCon in the past few years as far as football goes.

Only reason I have any clue about this is I'm a Mercer season ticket holder. They jumped from D-III up SoCon out of the blue when those schools bolted.

Really don't mean to denigrate Chattanooga. What they're doing in football and basketball right now is still impressive.
