How good are we really?

Yes, we are good enough to go 11 - 1, with some LUCK. The ball has to bounce our way a couple of times, like it did in 1998. Get take aways from other teams and have minimum injuries on our team.
We are also good enough to fumble 6 times in a game, throw 2 interceptions and go an entire game with out sacking the q.b. and on 4th and goal on the 1 yard line, we are good enough to NOT score a touchdown against Montana.
Which team will show up the remainder of the season??????

There is a gigantic (multiplied by 27) difference between this team's defense and 1998.

To add to that. The 1998 team:

Deon Grant, Deewayn, Stunnin' Steve, and Fred White.

All three starting LBs were drafted by the 3rd round.

Two future pro bowlers starting on the DL.

I don't see that kind of talent on this team. We have a stud, but really undersized DT in Jackson. Brent Brewer looks good, but he is no Deon Grant at this point.

I truthfully believe we are good enough to go 11-1 am I crazy

Unfortunately, "good enough" is what gets you 6-7 wins and a minor bowl.

But today, the Vols are undefeated, and I'll predict wins until proven wrong - and I hope that's not Saturday.:dance2:

Exactly... We have to show up for every game.. and it does take a little luck in the SEC... Even for BAMA... Phil has even said that the best team he had wasn't the 98 NC Team.. Breaks just went their way and we did it.. We can't ever let our guard down... I hope we are the underdog for every game this season!! GO VOLS!!

No. They're good enough to go 12-0 if the chips fall just right. The D and OL have to continue to develop quickly. UT cannot afford major injuries.

However, the odds are against the Vols vs Bama for certain. While the picture is still clearing up with regard to who has what, UT still may not be ready for UF, USCe, UGA, LSU, or Ark. By week 4, we'll know much better. Everyone in the top 2/3 of the SEC will have played a telling game. UT and UF go this week. LSU gets a test vs MSU. Bama gets Arkansas the next week.

I still struggle to buy USCe or Arkansas. I know they're getting early love... but I want to see more than what they've proven so far. We don't know how good UGA is and ECU challenged USCe pretty good.

Arkansas hasn't been challenged at all and should not be this week vs Troy... then things get more interesting.

I would love to see us go 11-1. I dont think thats going to happen though. I think 7-5 or maybe 8-4 is much more likely. I may re evaluate this thinking IF we beat Florida.

I don't think we play in the national championship THIS YEAR, but I do believe we will be a really good bowl. Our offense is really good, our defense is the problem right now, it will get better as the season goes on. If our offense can keep outscoring everyone, we have a chance.

Lets just be good enough to go 3-0 and see how it shakes out from there. Before the season I had Vols at 7-5 with wins over obvious and either Georgia or SC - losses to Florida, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Georgia or SC. Don't think much has changed. Saturday is our first test to beat a team most of us wrote off as a loss pre-season. So we'll see how it goes against a real SEC foe.

There is only one game I dont think we hae a legit chance to win which is @ Bama where elso do you see us losing.

Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Scarolina, Florida and GA are all loseable...don't understand some fans overconfidence over beating 2 bad teams with horrible defenses. We are playing a team bigger and faster than us at their house that we haven't beaten in 6 years. If we beat UF this wknd then I will start saying we could be pretty damn good.

11-1 ?! :loco::loco:
Come on MAN!

We didn't get where we are in 2 games and we're not going to return to where we were after only 2. Beating Montana and a team that went 4-8 last year doesn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies we can play Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, bammer, LSU and South Carolina and only lose to one of them.

Having said that I honestly admire your fandom, keep on believing brother!

I am probably one of the few here who will say that I honestly don't know who has what except for Bama. It will start to shake out more over the next couple of weeks. Right now... any of about 8 teams could be this year's surprise team.

Even looking at UGA... they could win out and be considered a great team at the end of the year.

Most SEC teams entered the season with significant question marks. Many considered USCe to be the favorite in the East. However the question marks they had on the OL are still there. QB is still an issue... and worse, their D hasn't looked as good as the hype yet. UGA beat them everywhere except the scoreboard.

LSU has QB questions.

Arkansas may or may not have a D and lost K Davis.

MSU already has a loss.

Auburn... where to start?

UT is young all over the field and could be great or terrible... same for UF.

Sometimes it makes me sick to get on here and read this sh*t. Especially you Vols fans who bash someone for being a little optimistic when the truth is weve looked pretty dang good regardless of the opponent. Most of you have no faith at all and seemed to have better things to say about simms before last year started lol.

Interestingly, some of the same ones saying UT has played no one thought Cincy had a good shot to beat UT this past weekend.

Truth is... fans should have "hope". There are some reasons to have hope. But optimism/pessimism requires more info than any of us really have right now.

some are being glamoured by high flying aerials.....in football the game is won inside out. we're built outside in at the moment. good enough to get 7 wins, no more.

I would love to see us 12-0, but those are allot of unhatched chickens you are counting. We are an 8 to 8 and a half point underdog this week according to those who are putting $$$ on it. Good to be optimistic, but as Johnny Majors once told his friend Beano Cook when in an interview Beano predicted UT would win a national championship in what most prognosticaters considered a rebuilding year, "I'm not going to let you sandbag me."

We could still be bad enough to go 6-6. Honestly, I think we'll finish better than 6-6, but 11-1 is crazy.[/QUOTE

I think your the one that is off the rocker. Georgia, South Carolina, and Arkansas are not that good, and Florida is a pretty legit team, but we handle all of them. I even think we stick it to LSU at home also. I'm only worried about Bama that is it. Again, Georgia is horrible, soft defense, an offense that lives on prayers, and is in deep, deep turmoil. Georgia doesn't win more than 5 games. GUARANTEED!!!

Except all those teams have more talent, more depth, and more proven coaching staffs (besides Florida)?
