How fast does JJ Peterson play?

The LB's were lost and couldn't get off blocks

Kirkland did do better with 11-12 tackles, but Kongbo/Bituli/Sapp weren't productive
The Dline is in shambles and had little penetration to effect the QB
The Oline was Oh crap
Part of the Dlines responsibility is to allow for a free range backer and keep clean blocks off of them. A linebacker reads their keys for a split second have their eyes in the backfield so If they are thinking a little too much and move just a half step too late and the DL isnt helping them run freely then they'll get caught up in the trash. I agree they need to do better ripping through blocks. The DL and LBs need to help each other out. Kirkland and Bituli need to react faster and I'm sure they will as they get more comfortable in the defense. Hopefully. I think the run D was playing well for the most part until they started picking us apart.

I don't think he sees significant playing time before USCjr. He'll play before that but that's when I think he will start to get significant snaps.

They averaged 5 yards a carry, so I'd probably have to disagree with you. They relied mostly on the passing game, because they know that's their bread and butter. But they still rushed for 118 yards and would have almost surely done much better if they needed to. Imagine how many more missed tackle opportunities we would have had!

Well when you are really only worried about a pass attack rushes are going to happen. The good news is none of them were broken for touchdowns. Grier and his receivers did all the TD scoring.

Conventional logic and reality says JJ missed all summer and fall workouts, which is significant, so he'll probably redshirt, and get 4 games in towards the end of the year. That being said, seeing the lack of speed by our LB's on Sat, maybe they just line him up and say "go get the ball". No doubt, Pruitt will do the right thing and not play him before he's ready, but man, I've got a feeling we're going to need him on the back half of the year to try and get bowl eligible, from SC to end of year.

He can’t play for 2 weeks per NCAA rules!

That's one way to look at it!

He could hop along in a feed sack, uphill, against a driving rain and be faster than just about everyone on the defense...especially our front seven:/

Tackling looked much the same as last year, unfortunately.
Again, it's the players, I'm ashamed of the difference in hitting and toughness that I witnessed Saturday between WV and the Vols.

Considering his difficulty in getting to UT, how quickly will he learn the 3 -4 system?

This will likely be the biggest hurdle for him if he is already in shape. I don’t know if he’s in shape yet or not either.

I'm sure CJP will get him in the rotation these next couple weeks. He's a valuable asset and these next two games will essentially be game-speed practices. I also think we'll get a lot of younger players in to develop depth and round out our looks/feels on the defensive side of the ball.

This kid is not anywhere ready to play...why would throw him in the fire unprepared and most likely out of shape only to see him set back with possible injury etc.....he has 4 games he can play in and still be redshirted. He has a long road of prep time and conditioning before he’s ready for college ball.

He was working out the entire time that he wasn't on campus, plus he already had the playbook. He's not that far behind and will continue to acclimate this week. He won't RS.

I will really be surprised to see him get meaningful snaps before AT LEAST the middle of October. This is very difficult stuff to grasp and it takes a while even for someone as sharp as say a Darrin Kirkland. I know the sets and philosophy are different and the reads and reacts are different as well but still we're talking about a kid in JJ who had trouble qualifying academically (understatement of the season so far). Like everyone I would hope he's the second coming of Al Wilson but we've been down that road of high expectations and been disappointed many times. Certainly a GREAT LB is not going to make a massive difference this year for sure. Lets hope for October and go from there.

Agree. If they see him playing, starting mid-october, and not redshirt, we may actually start to see him on special teams, starting w/ Florida...maybe

Don't you think Rush Prospt had maybe been going over stuff with him to help?

Could seeing being used in 3rd down situations where he has one assignment - get to the quarterback.

For those who just came on board the same chatter about Kongbo before he actually played.. Statements like I hope he don’t declare for NFL etc. he’s gonna kill people on & on
Hope JJ is all American but some players show up completely different in college versus HS. I’ll take wait & see. A total guess, we may see him on ST by the 5 game killer stretch. According to how he picks up on the D in practice and being in right place etc. If they think he’s gonna be great they’ll go ahead let him play over 4 games. If he’s not as good as advertised he’ll play 4 ST games & redshirt. Just a guess.

The hype for Kongbo was equal to that of Peterson. Shoop & Butch Stones stole him away from Bama and FSU. I followed that and remember watching JUCO film on him and thinking "I'm not really seeing that much here. But as many schools recruiting him, he's #1 rated, and our fanbase losing sleep over him can't ALL be wrong". The season is not over, and he IS a captain for a reason. But, I believe that "Beastly" ship has sailed. He looks real average on the field for 3 years straight now.

I would say that Rush may have his hands a little bit full with an upcoming season. While I'm sure he's happy one of his disciples is going to Knoxville, I can't imagine "prepping last year's player for college ball" being anywhere in the top 20 of his priority list.

Oh absolutely I think Rush was going over things with him. BUT that's a drop in the bucket to what it takes to be ready on this level. Rush probably should have been going over math and science etc more..... I hope I'm wrong and he plays as soon as he's eligible and takes the SEC by storm. I just don't see how he could play at an SEC level without having gone through at least fall practice. Maybe he can and I'd be badly mistaken. Truthfully it would be best for the young man to get his academic feet under him first but we all know that's not what will happen.

In the photos it appears JJ isn’t in shape. Instead of going to workouts he’s been going to In-N-Out.

He needs to play these next two games. They are only scrimmages, and we need to see how he does against cheese to see if he can handle meat.

This kid looks a lot bigger than I thought he was going to be....and possibly out of shape. We need blue chips like him to immediately come in and contribute. Not ideal, but that’s the state of the program.
