How does this game go and the consequences

Repeat of 2007 is how it's going to go.

Can you honestly point to a single game under Jones where we beat the hell out of an SEC opponent? No? Me neither.

I see only 3 possible outcomes in this game:

1. Tennessee loses in a blowout.
2. Tennessee loses a very close game, and it is because they beat themselves.
3. Tennessee wins a very close game, and it is because Georgia beats themselves.

This is correct

I’m not saying he’ll be fired directly after the game, win or lose. I do think it happens this year, though.

I haven't seen anything so far that makes me think this team is capable of anything better than 7-5, but you never know until the games are played.

I think the noise and intensity of Neyland will help the team keep it close for about 1 & 1/2 quarters.....

But then I think the wheels fall off on our defense....and Neyland begins to empty out midway thru the 3rd QTR

That big TE for UGA, Ngata, he can outrun our LBs on seams and will have a couple of long plays...

Chubb and Michel will run wild...expect them to combine for over 250 yards rushing....and about 500 total yards...

The pups will load the box against us to stop JK....will probably pick off at least 2 of QD's passes....and keep Dormady confused and ineffective throwing the ball....

I honestly do not expect us to put up over 200 yards of total offense in the game....

Well....

The closest thing we have done is the 2nd half of last year's Florida game.....We pretty much beat them down by scoring 35 points in 2 QTR.....and only allowing them to score 7 in the 2nd half...

So 35-7 for 2 QTRS is the BEST we've done...

Put 63 on Mizzou last year...but it wasn't a beat-down....it was a track meet....

Agreed on Florida 2016 being the closest, but it still wasn't a 4 quarter effort. It was a half of really good football. Jones is far too inconsistent and makes too many poor decisions to get 4 quarters of really good football out of his teams. I've been waiting to see it for the past 5 years, it's not happening.

If the GA Defense that played Miss St shows up, I don't see us scoring enough to win?!?

And it brings no pleasure to say that!

.

Well....Butch has yet to fix the epic slow starts on offense leading back to last year with more experienced talent. If we don't score in the 1st half...could get real ugly real fast....RIGHT GUYS?

That’s rich coming from a guy who in the very same post is saying when and what an AD should do/say.

According to you, we should have kept Dooley for a few more years. Your logic is flawed. No shame in owning up to it.

To compare the state of the program today to the end of Dooleys tenure is just short of ridiculous.

I don't state what an AD should do in every situation but that is how cultures typically change, staffs typically grow and programs become successful. At least it was on the pre fast food mentality and social media days.

Dooley could have been fired for recruiting malfeasance alone, adrer the second year of his coaching career at Tennessee. Jones program has improved gradually and the record is there to show. On top of the athletes that have been recruited the academics of the team have improved. Couple those with the fact our guys stay out of trouble and only someone who doesn't have the best interest of the program would be begging to change the coach mid season.

And for the record I am not a big fan of Butch. However I trust Butch much more to make it to Atlanta than I do for the AD who played a role in running of a Hall of Fame coach off in making the right decision in hiring a better coach.

I agree with almost all of this. Butch has done a great job recruiting and academics. He’s being paid a top 20 salary to win games. If he’s clearly not the guy, what’s the point in waiting a few more years to find someone else?

This is more like it

I don't think this game matters in the grand scheme of things, I think Butch is gone at the end of the season no matter what. He either goes out on his own or is fired. I don't think he likes it here as much as he lets on and his issue with the media is only going to make things worse.

In year 5 this team is off to a 3-1 start with all their goals still attainable. At the end of the sixth year is when an administrator can definitively say the coach has found his ceiling.

So what if the Vols go 5-7 this season? Do you still give BJ year 6? Check me on thus someone, but I believe even Coach Jones said year 4 (2016) was UTs year.

I was agreeing with you...

But you asked...and I honestly couldn't think of a dominating 4 qtr performance.....

Fla and Mizzou was all that I could think of....

Sadly, I do not see UGA beating themselves this game. They are coming for revenge and will be well prepared for this game. I also do not see us being able to beat Georgia. UT needs Georgia to beat themselves to have a chance in this game, and I just don't see that happening.

As far as the consequences go, if Currie is smart the outcome of this game does not change Butch's departure by the end of the season. IMO, Botch has won games, but he has not turned this program around. Frankly, he is just a lucky SOB. Our win records under Butch should be worse than what they are, but he has gotten lucky on multiple occasions like a missed extra point by App State which led to overtime rather than App State beating us, the Hail Mary last year against UGA, and honestly the botched 2 pt conversion by GT this year just to name a few. We need someone here that can coach on the field and get the job done, and Butch doesn't have it. I'm getting tired of the nail biters against teams like UMass. In 5 years of "rebuilding" we have lots of talent that can't execute on the field. I think Butch's coaching is just as bad as his masonry skills, 5 years later and he is still working on laying his first brick.

I thought Butch said it would take 7 years to become successful.

Well, he gets a pass on the first 2 seasons because of Derek Dooley, so that bumps is up to 9 actually, which is why Currie should give him a 5-year extension before Saturday, so that some other school won't come along and snatch him away.

If we lose to GA and AL and win the rest then what? (especially if GA winds up looking legit the rest of the year) Win the bowl and it's a 10 win season with only losses being to Bama, a highly ranked GA and a FL team we had beat. Anybody really think Butch would be fired in that scenario? (not a question of "should"...merely would)

I think we have 3 possible outcomes
1. Georgia runs away with it and we reach the event horizon of the Butch Jones era where a coaching change is only a matter of time
2. Georgia wins a close one and buys Butch a little more time b/c the team looked better.
3. UT wins a close one and Butch buys himself another season at least and the possibility of 10-2

To take your 3.

1. Yes, he's in a bad way if UGA rolls.
2. While still in a bad way, its not as bad as getting thumped. No where near out of the woods.
3. UT win will cool the flames even more but that doesn't guarantee him anything. UT lost 3 straight after UGA last year, then Vandy.

UGA is not going to "save" his job, but it could push him a lot closer to packing depending on how it goes down.

Just for the heck of it, how about UGA Frosh throws three ints and Neyland gets rocking and UT pulls off the improbable stomp upset!!! Don't expect it, but stranger things have happened. Go Vols.

I think either UT wins a close one last minute again or UGA takes care of business because Butch wet the bed again. I can't see it going any other way.

Here is how I see things unfolding - starting around Noon or so

1. I will drink like 15 beers
2. east several pounds of wings
3. pass out around 3pm
4. Sh** the bed
5. wife leaves me - for good this time
6. I wake up next day, read the wifes note on the pillow
7. see the score on VN that we beat the Dawgs by 21
8. Celebrate by repeating steps 1 though 4
