How does Gerald change the depth chart?

that prowler defense just looks mean, i like it, think we'll get more of it with all the aforementioned stuff about our D ?

The "Prowler" was a spectacular failure when applied to UF last year. Perhaps it was a misbalanced Defense, perhaps it was an inexperienced Defense... but it failed, nonetheless.

it has worked for us before is all. not as our base defense, but just as a change of pace against a more traditional style offense. not saying i wanna see it all the time at all, just didnt feel like typing all that...:snoring:

we are not switching to a 3-4 ,3-3-5, or any other GIMMICK defense. We are Tennessee and we run a smash mouth 4-3 pro style defense. Gerald Williams playing means eventually wilson will take over at strong side and Gerald will be starting at middle lb whenever he has shown that hes ready. That helps with our front 7 and definately helps with our depth. There are some who say can wilson handle the play calling duties. well guess what, he was ryan karls back up the last two years so im sure he has knowledge of that position and is capable of making all the calls. Gerald Williams is a MLB and i dont see him doing any better on the edge as a DE. Mayo last year got to the quarterback any time he wanted on middle blitzes (when they were called) and i suspect we will see more of that this year

3-4 a Gimmick? Steelers, 49ers, Raiders this year-- 3-3-5 maybe you can call a gimmick but if the spread makes it way the NFL so will the 3-3-5. Even if we play a 4-3 on paper we will have Martin or Walker etc in coverage thus they some what a 3-4. You cannot play with big slow DEs any more see Reynolds. Too many 4-5 WR sets or RB who can play WR. So if the automobile was a gimmick then yes the two previously mentioned Ds are gimmicks.

I liked the idea of a 3-4 early in the offseason but once you practice all year, changing is almost impossible. I am sure we will see some sort of 3-3-5 or a 3-2-6 (depending on who gets brought in the secondary as a blitzer) this year in certain situations but our base will still be the 4-3.

The best defenses in the NFL run a 3-4.

That's arguable. Colts, Jaguars, Bucs, Broncos, Giants, Vikings, Redskins, and Seahawks have all had very formidable 4-3 defenses in recent years.

If you want to see a 3-4 in action against a good college team, UVA is attempting it right now.

STeelers, Patriots, Ravens, Cowboys, Chargers. Much more impressive list IMO.

I think a former safety has the athleticism to move to SLB. It's not like he is some big slow MLB. He is a pretty quick guy at about 225-230 pounds.

"If's and but's...candy and nuts".....

4-3, 3-4, 3-3-5, whatever.....

UT is a base 4-3 defense. Gerald Williams will add to the quality, and depth, of that package. Trust me, they'll find a place for him to play. And he'll make plays.

Gerald Williams does change the depth chart. He makes it deeper. Deeper is better.

Go Vols.

Right there is the only thing we know for sure right now. Good post.
