How Does Dooley Do It?

I think UT sells itself to some degree. The new football complex doesn't hurt things either. VFL is a good selling point for parents and for those young men who realizes they need guidence in life they can't get from anyone at home.

This staff recruits well given our lack of wins the last few years. Keep in mind Dooley is not the only coach who has had bad seasons. Fulmers last years and Kiffins year were not good either.

We are restocking with talent. We are down to two coaches recruits instead of three. We are returning most all of our starters.

If Dooley can get 9 wins next year look for an explosioin of elite atheletes to come in '13.

Dooley had #9 and #13 recruiting classes in '10 and '11, and looks a lock to get to #6 or #7 in 2012.

Given our poor performance in the field since 2004, what is he selling? Why do these kids want to come here?

Believe me, I know the great history of this program (I've lived most of it), but these days that counts for zip. Yet these 18 and 20 yo's keep coming.

Are these kids and their parents clever enough to grasp the historical certainty that the Vols are way over due for greatness?

Happy and befuddled.

They (18-19 year olds) understand the rebuilding effort, unlike the majority of their fanbase, just sayin!!! GO VOLS!

People have tried to paint UT as a tough sell. That is ridiculous. UT is still a top 10 in terms of budget and facilities. And this when you consider that the latest facility isn't even yet complete. Facilities, tradition, SEC founding member, top bowl appearance school, fan base. Dooley is only proving something I already new. Fulmer really wasn't as great a recruiter as credited. Fulmer did in a time when you could clean house in North and South Carolina. Dooley doesn't have that luxury.

But let's not forget that Dooley also recruited the team that quit against UK. Not sure how that speaks towards tuff mindedness.

Facilities and a rabid fan base make Tennessee an easy sell. Fulmer did it for over 15 years and routinely produced recruiting classes ranked in the top ten.

Rabid fanbase isn't always a plus.

UT does have great facilities but has to... since they get very, very few legacy players or homers with SEC talent. TN has no instate talent compared to GA, FL, and even smaller states like SC, AL, MS, LA.

BTW, take a look at Fulmer's vaunted classes. He averaged about what DD has over his first two years and probably will after the third. The rankings are not an apples to apples comparison from his "best years" to DD's first 3. First, he didn't have the same signing limits. Second, Rivals gave credit for big classes.

Fulmer's last four classes totaled 99 players and averaged 3.41 stars. Dooley has signed two classes totaling 52 players. One avg'd 3.41 stars and the other 3.44 stars. Even with the situation Dooley inherited he's bringing in as much talent as Fulmer was. A critical difference is that Dooley isn't losing players left and right to behavior, grades, drug tests, etc. The players he recruited and has lost so far have been because they could not compete or had personal issues.

You guys didn't do really well at test did you? He has been on staff with some of the best recruiters in the nation. We can hate on his in game coaching all day, but the man can flat out recruit. He is upgrading talent at an insane pace considering the product that has been put on the field the last couple years. Heck, we have all been vol fans our entire lives and we are calling for his head. Imagine the selling job this man and his staff have to do in home. Hate on him all you want but the man is an elite recruiter and it can't be argued.

Not everyone is calling for his head. Many rational posters here recognize CDD needs time to rebuild. Here's hoping his recruiting leads us back to being the team we were in the 90's.:hi:

Dooley has the largest recruiting budget in the nation to work with. We are # 1. If you enter a young man's living room and make it rain with Ben Franklins.......hey, that opens a few eyes. lol

but what are we doing in regards to DT? still see a shortcoming there that we simply cant afford

J Schofield, Marques Pair, Tiny Richardson, Zach Fulton and James Stone are all being moved to DT in time for spring practice.

Then they are going to move the lighter guys out to DE.

Dooley signed a 4*, 3*, and 2* last year. The class he took over from Kiffin only had one DT and he didn't make it to campus. He added a 2* project in April. Between 2006 and 2009, Kiffin/Fulmer signed a total of ONE recruit (Hughes) that ever played a down at the position for UT.

That's part of the problem Dooley inherited.

He is a lawyer, so he's good at persuading folks.

But not much of a football coach.

Do it now:

I would say immediate playing time helps. Recruits can look at the stars of the team and they are mostly freshmen and sophs.

Funny.

The problem is how if UT/Dooley sells well and we keep losing 6 games a year, we don't end up like underachieving Texas in 2 years?

Do these recruits think CDD is a good HC and why?

For a wise-ole-vol you sure ask a lot of questions....:)

My take...based on win-loss record, they may be drinking the kool-aide. He likey does well in front of the kids and their parents. And that part I feel is not bs but sincere on his part...I think CDD is selling more than just football and that is winning hearts and minds.

Given 2 more years with CDD, this program should be back to a top 10 program.

yep... It's not hard to say hey, we're Tennessee, look at all of our players that have made it in NFL, we're in the SEC, we have top notch facilities and, oh, we need help pretty much everywhere immediately.

First i agree totally that Dooley is an awesome recruiter but you made a huge mistake. You are assuming we are the only team that will move in the polls on NSD. We are almost guaranteed top 15 likely between 10 and 12. Getting 6 or 7 with only 2 slots left would take some massive surprises.

We have three slots left tino and bullard don't count on the intial 25 but they have to make room for them on the 85 scholarship roster
