How do you think America will end?

A provocative title, to be sure. (Perhaps the current unrest in Ukraine has given me pause.) However, we all know our current status as World Number One can't last forever. Something will change. The following is a somewhat dated (2009) article from Slate (yeah, I know, but it's fairly open-minded as far as that source is concerned) that provides numerous inquiries into how we might go the way of the Romans:

The End Of America

The question here is how will we be rendered a society that would be unrecognizable to us today.

So, how will America end?

Personally, near term (10-25 years from now), I say the most likely scenario is a dire economic crisis (not necessarily China related) and/or a civil war that pits stern ideological differences against one another. Imo, the economic crisis would have to precipitate the civil war.

Long term (25 or more years from now, but obviously this includes the near term causes as well), I say oil peak or some sort of energy crisis. My secondary choice is climate change and its results.

What say you?

By end do you mean no longer exist as a sovereign nation, no longer be a top (1, 2 or 3) world power, or be completely gone?

I'm assuming #1 here. At this point I don't see it occurring in any near term - if it did it would be some type of splitting into multiple countries but that too is doubtful.

It seems that most dissolutions since America was founded was via revolution or conquest. I don't foresee either - or put another way, I don't see events that would result in either for the near term (50 or less years)

Surely you learned this years ago- continental America starts at the Pacific and ends at the Atlantic. It starts at Mexico and ends at Canada.

If it is simply societal change then we are already seeing it. I'm sure our FFs would look at the impact of government and say WTF?

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

I don't know. But it's gotta end better than "Lost" did.

I'm a big sci-fi fan and I still don't understand Lost.

If I read Levin correctly (and his series on this issue is extensive), then I interpret his inquiry as one that explores what an "America that we no longer recognize as being America" means. For me, personally, this could mean an America that (while sovereign) is no longer the America of today (territorially or politically speaking). It could also mean an America that is no longer the preeminent superpower. Or, it could also mean a completely erased America, although I think this latter scenario highly implausible (at least within the next 100-500 years).

I know these scenarios are open and diverse, but I welcome any input.

My OP prediction, I suppose, mostly refers to an America that no longer possesses its current superpower status, in terms of politics, economics, and military.

Someday USA will cease to exist and it will be through legislation and there will be thunderous applause. There wont even be a fight.

Society is nearly unrecognizable from what it was when I was a kid. I would say America as I knew it is gone. It started 1/1/07 and the death knell started November 2008. It is on life support now and I'm not sure that it will ever awake from the coma......it's more like hospice.

Your last paragraph describes Barry's agenda to a tee . And if you've read Levin you know this to be true.
