How do you judge a coach?

I judge a coach soley on his win/loss record while others may judge a coach based on how he recruits, his looks or how good of a speaker he is.

I do not factor in recruiting because it has been proven through time that a bad coach cannot win with good talent and a good coach can win with bad talent. I also do not care if a coach speaks to hte media at all as long as he can win.

Sorry wanted to add this is not just for Dooley but for all coaches in all sports.

win loss record first, with more credit for wins over rivals than wins over other opponents
recruiting second, because that gives you a sense of where the program is going and what the coach's ceiling will be

Accent alone. Seriously though, W/L, competitive with rivals, willingness to discipline players, must be respectful of our history and institutions, capable of representing us in a positive light with regard to media.

I agree. Unfortunately too many vol fans seem to judge a coach according to his hair and weight. I don't understand the man love aspect. Win or leave.

Its like anything else. Its all about the product. Right now we dont have a very good product. Right now we have 5 top level athletes. The rest are average to slightly above average. The problem is the coaching. Our team has no leadership and that starts at the top. Right now we have a coach who cannot manage a game and never has had the ability to manage the game. Right now we have a guy that can recruit some stars but cant get the non stars to play up to a level above. I truly thought that he just needed time. Although now hes had his time. I am done with him and his time.

Huge huge flaw to judge on wins and losses. We have realistically one credible win this season. The other two wins a lot of lower division teams would win. I judge a coach by his ability to win some big SEC games as has always been the case at UT. I have been a fan for a long time and I do not expect any less from any coach, I don't care who you are. Close games mean lost games.

Eventually we have to judge a coach on Wins and Losses. Results matter and we don't win National Championships based on anything else.

I just don't know how long you give a coach before you should judge him on Wins and Losses alone.

I wonder if the Athletic Department had milestones in place for what they expect and where they expected us to be by the end of each year? If such a list exist then we should judge by it. (Assuming we trust the Department)

Wins against quality opponents and bad losses. Kind of like the RPI ratings used for basketball tournament. As someone mentioned earlier some of the creme puffs that coaches win and hang their hat on many non Major conference schools would also beat. I don't expect to beat the powers every time out but to compete and win as many as we lose and beat the mediocres and dominate the creme puffs. Another factor is adjustments. I like when a coach can tweak his game plan if initial gameplan is not working.

If you judge in purely by wins and losses, how long do you judge the coach? I lived in SC when Spurrier was first hired and a lot of people wanted to can him after 3-4 years since he wasn't "winning enough". People argued he was too old and/or too uninterested. Keeping him around worked out ok.
Not saying DD is another SS, just wondering if you believe its all Ws and Ls, how long do you take to judge the coach?

Do you judge him/her by...

the stock price (P/E ratio)?
profits (which should affect P/E?)
environmental impact of operations?
morale of employees as measured by volunteer hours?
ability to deal with Wall Street analysts?
ability to grow into new markets?
ability to deal with the media?
vision?
ability to develop new products/services?

In short, all of these. BUT, if the company isn't making money - none of the rest will matter in time. The company won't exist for long.

Same for coaches. Ultimately the bottom line (profit analogy) is winning vs. losing. If you don't win, nothing else really matters.
