I was under the same impression, and used that article as my justification. It was pointed out to me that his contract was simply amended to reflect the new additions. There is nothing in the amendment that changes his buyout.I’m certainly not saying your wrong as I don’t know. This article is where I got my info (scroll down to buyout section) not saying it’s correct.
The 10 biggest differences in the new contract for Rick Barnes
The article doesn’t specify which way or if it’s two way; however from their “wording” it makes one believe it’s two way.
From the article......as to why it looked like the buyout goes two ways.
“The buyout in his previous contract, according to Barnes, is what kept him at Tennessee after negotiations with UCLA broke down due to the $5 million that would have been owed to the Vols had he left, at a rate of $1 million per year remaining on his contract. Under his new contract amendment, a lot more money is involved”

That article was ambiguous, at best with regards to the buyout.

Like I said, it was very ambiguous. Perhaps intentional, perhaps not, but irresponsible editing if it wasn’t.When they talk about the 5 million that would be owed to Tennessee, then go directly into saying the money will be greater now...........that’s almost dirty reporting........maybe not but it sure isn’t the kind I grew up on reading.
WTH is with this kind of crap? We have our coach. They have theirs. Move on for britches sake.
Fulmer really got a pretty crappy deal for the university
I’m not referring to him leaving, I don’t think there’s much concern about that anymore...my point is that he is now paid as a Top 3 coach and if he were to fall off a cliff and the program suck a$$ for the next 2 years we would have no option but to continue to employ him because of the massive buyout. On the flip side he could pick up and go whenever he wants for very little cost, Tennessee appeared to take on all the risk when it comes to buyout and in addition pay him way more than they should’ve. Fulmer showed how green he is as an AD, he got a crappy deal for the university.I agree, for Tennessee.......I guess especially on the buyout end.
However the sheer size of the contract kind of works towards helping that buyout in Tennessee’s favor. I mean really who is going to offer up 30 million and pay the 5 million buyout (or 4 after this upcoming season).
I think the whole structure makes it where Barnes prob retires here or doesn’t leave for 3 or 4 years. And even then something amazing would have to have happened (for some school to come calling and shucking out the kind of dough which would be required).

I don't think it was inexperience on Fulmers part. If anything, he knew full well he couldn't play hardball and let Barnes walk after these last two seasons. Barnes held all the cards and both parties knew it. Fulmer also knows the landscape with the board and how hard it is to get top shelf talent to Knoxville. If he draws a line on the money and Barnes left, the howls about being cheap go wild. On top of that, having Pearl winning at a conference opponent only would add to the angst. Fulmer had to keep Barnes. No choice really.
So you don’t think Barnes stays for $4m? You think he told Phil only way he would stay is for $5.2m average and up to $3m in incentives? If it’s true that UCLA pulled their offer to Barnes then he definitely wasn’t holding all the cards, Fulmer would’ve been holding all the cards. I’m not saying it is true but I also don’t think Barnes demanded $5.2m from Fulmer, I think that was the offer from Phil and Barnes quickly snatched it up.
ZERO chance
No program in the world would be willing to pay 25 million (or so) for his buyout.
Barnes was not willing to pay around 2.3 million of the buyout to go to UCLA.......so he isn’t going to pay it.
Tennessee would never force him out one year into this new contract and pay 20-25 million.
Barnes is here for 4 more years regardless. Really the HUGE buyout should make everyone happy, the school, the fans, Barnes and even recruits.
I’m sorry I know a lot of you folks still want Pearl............but it’s simply not going to happen.
Pearl has now achieved a greater level of success at Auburn than he did at TN. That makes TN a step down for him in at least one very real sense. Sour grape it all you want, his lack of desire to be here again would be the most important factor in his not returning.
I agree in terms of the weighted contract. But maybe (hopefully) Fulmer was thinking more logical like us............
sure the contract heavily favors Barnes..........but no one can come in and offer that kind of money anyway.........sure we could be on the hook if things go south, but we most likely give him 3 more anyway.......then the buyout is 5 maybe 5.5. To keep him here, for stability, and the potential growth........I’ll gamble 5.5 million.
Maybe not, but if I were in on that deal that’s the only way I could see it.
