How did Auburn do it?

UT and Auburn were in almost the exact situation a few years ago. Auburn sucked, was going through a coaching change and had the NCAA looking into their program. All of the sudden they are a top 5 team. What can TN learn from this?

Look just a little deeper. While Auburn was winning a natty in 2010, we were beginning arguably the worst 3 year period in our program's history. They continued to recruit extremely well over the next couple years. Yes they fired their HC, but the talent, the speed remains on their roster as we saw last week. Our classes were looked pretty good on paper, but due to high attrition and poor player development, have not panned out in any way.

The biggest difference is, I believe, the immediate cohesion created once they re-hired Malzahn, this time as HC. He had been there only a couple years before and was essentially being reunited with many of the players he had recruited who knew his and were suited for his offensive system.

Two very different situations.

As bad as Chizik seemed to be, he still wasn't Dooley bad. We regressed under Dooley much further than Auburn under Chizik and they maintained strong recruiting while we struggled.

They won a national title less than 3 years ago. The situations aren't even slightly comparable.

They won a NC bc they signed Cam Newton, and hired a dynamic OC in Gus Malzahn. Tennessee had an opportunity to get Cam if I recall, but chose Matt Simms instead. This is just another colossal example of Tennessee hurting itself through poor decision-making over and over again. If I remember correctly, Tennessee could have hired Gus Malzahn as well... We chose Derek Dooley. Pat UT on the back, once again, for that one. As bad as I want to feel bad for our situation I continue to go back to the simple logic that we've put ourselves here.

They've recruited better over the past 3 years. Malzahn was only one year removed from coaching there. They found another Cam Newton waiting around in Juco. God does seem to favor the Tigers..

And all offensive players were recruited to run Malzahn's system

They have been recruiting speed while we have been recruiting really slow players at critical positions...

I think the biggest difference is Malzahn is absolutely legit and UT should have backed up the armored truck full of cash to his doorstep last year.

Every offensive player on Auburn was recruited by Gus. He recruited them for his offense. He was only gone from the school for one year and it's obvious who the brain trust was when Auburn was winning and it wasn't Chizic (spelling). The 1 yr he wasn't there and Auburn could not win. Gus knows all these guys and the system. Sound familiar?
UT had the same situation when Cutcliffe left Fulmer & went to Ole Piss, we were good with coach Cut and terrible when he wasn't there. This is why I thought several years ago when Fulmer was let go that Cutcliffe should have been the new coach, and even more proof is look what he is doing at Duke. I believe in CBJ also, but it will take a couple of years and it's all thanks to Hamilton!

bUTch started with Dooley and Kiffin's mess. Huge difference between the 2. 2015 we'll be good and SEC champs. 2016 National title aspirations! All the Freshmen will be Seniors and this recruiting class jrs.!

Fade gets it.. Cbj may turn out Ok but malzahn is light years ahead of our staff. I'm not sure why we didn't approach him both times..

It goes back to playing to your strengths n using the talent u have n then transition your system. Cbj is stubborn n that is a flaw just like rich rod at Mich...

We regressed so badly under Dooley that we averaged 7 losses per season. The 2 years before he got here, we only averaged 6 and 1/2 losses a year. Dooley could have averaged 6 and 1/3 losses, but he lost 2 after the "final whistle" blew.

Is he stubborn and set in his ways or is he confident in his choices?

Butch is here to build for the long haul. He is playing tons of freshman. Instead if them learning a system this year then transitioning again and again Butch is making them learn his system that has been proven to work.

This will pay off in the long run. When these freshman are juniors/seniors they will have played in the same proven system and taught the incoming guys how to do it and how to win.

Short term loss, but long term win.

They rehire the brains of the national championship operation with the batsh-t crazy wife and sweet visor.

That's how they did it.

Pure luck is how they won. They should have won but their lousy play brought Georgia back then luck was on their side.

There's no "we". There were caretakers of the program that didn't do their jobs (Kiffin, Hamilton, Dooley) their due diligence with the decisions they made that ultimately wound up hurting the program very badly. Fortunately, they're no longer here, unless you wanna indirectly throw Cheek in there.

As a fan I know I sure as hell wasn't involved in any if those decisions. Not saying I'd have done any better, just saying that fans are "held hostage" to the decisions made by those in charge at the moment.

There is always a probability that Auburn will be back into the NCAA investigation Mode, because Alabama Fans will always find a way to make that happen. If Auburn gets hotter then Alabama will start creating ways to stir the NCAA pot.

If UT hired Cutcliffe in 2008 or 2009 then there may have been some of the positive effects Auburn has, meaning players he recruited, familiarity, etc

I thought that was a terrible idea at the time. Now, looking back I think it would have been a good hire.
