Yeah, I was at that game. We used to play Alabama and Auburn both in that stadium which was in the rough part of Birmingham. You had to park on the street and pay the locals to "guard your car".As others have said, it was against Alabama in 89...i was there at the game...in "lesion" field...that was a name given by bama fans!
What I remember...during an early part of the game the alabama air national guard was flying F4s over the stadium...at one point, as UT was driving, they flew over and it was insanely loud...and we jumped offsides...grrrr
Another point, we knocked the starting RB out of the game and the backup RB was Siran Stacy...who had about 200 yards against us and was SEC player of the week...
I remember we had seats in the upper deck surrounded by bama fans...we were definitely the outsiders! But my wife and I were just there to watch the game and cheer our team...no crap from the bama folks!
It was Oct 21, 1989 when Andy Kelly came in for Hinton in the Alabama game in Birmingham and rallied the Vols, though they lost that game it was obvious that he was the better passer and we did have a pro type offense. He started the rest of the season and we finished 11-1 winning the SEC and beat Arkansas in the cotton bowl.
Interesting that we were 5-0 when Sterling lost his starting job which seems almost unfair. But to his credit, he didn't transfer or pout. Would be different today with social media.
Old enough to remember those years really well. 1989 was year 4 or a 9 year stretch without a win over Alabama. Yes there was a lot of winning during that time but there was also a lot of pissing away games to weaker teams.
According to Wikipedia, 89 Alabama game. I had never looked at his Arena League numbers until now. Those are some fantasy numbers he was putting up!
I loved Kelly. I always thought we were going to win when he played QB. I wish I had that feeling again. My favorite QB after Payton.
