I remember we had seats in the upper deck surrounded by bama fans...we were definitely the outsiders! But my wife and I were just there to watch the game and cheer our team...no crap from the bama folks!

Yeah, I was at that game. We used to play Alabama and Auburn both in that stadium which was in the rough part of Birmingham. You had to park on the street and pay the locals to "guard your car".

P.S. IIRC, Bama had a little known QB named Gary Hollingsworth who had a career day. I also remember It was hot and Majors had his starters covering kicks and they wore out.

They had no choice but to replace him with Kelly. He had gotten into a bad habit of simply not passing the ball. He would just buy time until the pocket broke down and then would run with it. It was one of the stranger football maladies I had ever seen.

Old enough to remember those years really well. 1989 was year 4 or a 9 year stretch without a win over Alabama. Yes there was a lot of winning during that time but there was also a lot of pissing away games to weaker teams.

Also a lot of slow starts in games. So it was more like similar times than better times.

As a starter Kelly finished his UT career at 24-5-2, the third best winning percentage in school history for quarterbacks who started in 3+ years. He is fifth all-time on UT's passing leaderboard with 6,397 yards, behind Manning, Clausen, Ainge, and Bray.

Won 2 SEC titles in his 3 years as a starter. Had many big wins, including against Notre Dame and the Sugar Bowl. Yeah seems like recent times to me too

I was born in 88, so obviously I didn't get to experience these times, but wow that was an absolute beast of a run.

Reggie Cobb and Chuck Webb would've been one of the best 1-2 punches in history if Cobb could've stayed outta trouble.

Maybe because people are hoping a change in QB might work in 2017.

I was hoping to see Sheron Jones in the mix this year.
I know he had the passion to win. I was hoping adding a qb coach would pay big dividends.

Kurt Warner had an elite arm. Andy Kelly couldn’t make all the required NFL throws...ala Danny Wuerffel.

I loved Kelly. I always thought we were going to win when he played QB. I wish I had that feeling again. My favorite QB after Payton.

He could lead a comeback from any score. Only problem was many times he was the reason we were behind in the first place. Some real creative turnovers in his career. But I agree with his label of Vol greatness.

Andy made me pull all my hair out. He could have only 1-2 bad throws the whole game but they'd be interceptions. I used to wonder if he was colorblind.
