I'm at a 4. Last night was very concerning. With a good game next week, this goes down to a 2.

I'm at a 2.

I think the majority of the miscues could be chalked up to a combination of first game jitters and overlooking App St. and most of them seem like easy fixes.

I didn't really expect the passing game to be crisp, but if the booth makes the correct call on the Williams TD and the long throw to Smith is a completion, we're talking about over 60% completion percentage, approx 250 yds, and a couple TD's, which would have been pretty solid. O-line is far and away the main concern for me; they should have been able to move that App St. front 7 around pretty well, but they couldn't make a crease for Hurd all night. Debord and Mahoney are gonna have to get that fixed if we're gonna have any kind of shot at winning the east.

D was good, especially second half. With App St. offensive style/game plan, I don't think we were ever gonna get a ton of sacks. Without the muffed punt, they prob score 6 or 7 points the whole game.

I thought the special teams coverage units would look better, but they weren't bad. Their kicker did a good job of making Evan Berry a non-factor and their ball-control offense limited punt return opportunities.

Oh, and by the way, the same Tee Martin that went 9-26 for 143 yards that night set a then NCAA record for highest completion percentage in a game seven weeks later going 25-26 in a win against South Carolina.

Martin was never an accurate passer. Aside from that one game against SC, he was average at best.

1 but I'm a positive person overall. There were a lot of bad things to get mad about during the game and I was but I've gotten over it. I honestly think this game was a fluke and they wont play that bad again. As always there is room for improvement but that goes for life in general.

4 because of the offensive and defensive lines being physically whipped.
Butch actually admitted that we lost the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
To do that against a smaller, less talented team = very concerned

I think App State is a better team than people give them credit for and a well-coached team that did have a 11-2 record last year and lost to Clemson. That said, we still should have beaten that team by at least 14 pts. I'm still very much concerned with Dobbs passing and decision-making ability; one quick look down-field and he wants to tuck & run. Teams will load up the box and make him beat them through the air; that's what I would do & I think it's evident. If they don't respect the pass we'll get our azz handed to us.

I am amazed at how many people who have spent A LOT of time ripping me for being "negative" are ready to give up already.

Guys.... it is one game. UT should have beaten them by more than the spread. They didn't. There are a lot of reasons. One is ASU played like it was THEIR national championship game.

Another part is something Jones mentioned. They played a N Texas game plan to limit UT. Sutton's fumble and UT's early miscues on O played right into that strategy. Their front 7 gave UT fits with their quickness but they're likely the only opponent UT will play that emphasizes quicks over power to that extreme.

If UT loses to VT then let's have this Chik'n Lil party. But until then... let's not be suicidal. What do you say?

Exactly! It's been ONE game! Let's wait and see what happens in Bristol bf we act like we what this team is or is not capable of.

4, very concerned. Lack of team leadership on Thursday and the coaches' mindset concern me greatly. Only the first game so a 180 vs Va Tech and all is quickly forgotten. But if we see any similarities between the App St and VaTech games then not only will we leave Bristol 1-1, we'll be staring a very long, difficult season in the face.

Martin threw a great long ball... was the diff in the SECCG and NC games on long passes to Peerless.

You're both right IMO.

Martin was generally a below average/poor passer. But the one thing he could do was throw an excellent deep ball and, as you pointed out, he threw some clutch ones in a magical 1998 season.

However, the magic ran out his senior season when he only completed 54% of his passes and had a 12/9 TD to int ratio.

All spring and summer I've seen predictions of 10 or more regular season wins, winning the SEC East, even winning the SEC and making the playoffs.

But every time I looked at our schedule, coupled with the fact Dobbs has never been a great passer and concerns about Butch's coaching (especially closing out games) I keep coming up with at least 3 losses. Bama, one between UF/UGA, and possibly one between VT, A&M, Arky. Best case was 10-2 by staying healthy and having some luck.

But now after the near Appy debacle, the concerns definitely remain regarding Dobbs/Butch but I'm now also concerned about the OL and defense. I still think 9-3 is possible, but I really question us winning the East let alone making the playoffs.

The VT game will give a true direction of team 120 for 2016, it's a must win if the Vols are to contend for anything other than getting slammed by the media for being overhyped

Concerned.. Concerned...Are you kiddin me!! Did you watch Alabama game, Florida game, Georgia game, A&M?
Learned it was not a penalty to throw ball down field more than 5 yards. I learned running outside the tackles wasnt a penalty... i learned it was OK to do something on 1st down other than run up the middle for 2 yards.
Amazing all the things you can learn from watching real SEC teams.
Anyone thinking Tennessee is in the same league with any of the aforementioned teams is fooling themselves!

I am a pessimist and would say after seeing the results after this weekend I'm going with 1-2. I think App State is a very quality team and we were napping thinking that skill/potential and a vanilla game plan could run them outta the stadium.

Are there things that need to be fixed? You bet ya!
Is our season a lost cause? Not even close.

The biggest changes/improvements are made between week 1 and 2. The BoB VT game will be a truer indication of what team 120 can produce.

The only team I think is PROBABLY a loss is Bama. I think there are 2 toss ups (UGA and TAMU). The rest should be W's.

You need to drop this "real" sec team nonsense. It's one freaking ugly game. This same group of guys have went 12 rounds with some of the best teams in the nation and outplayed them a lot of the time at that. Playing like this past game has been rare with this same group of guys, especially with a full game plan like we will see here on out.

UT is one of the founding fathers in the sec and the 2nd all time leader in this conference of juggernauts so drop that "real" sec team crap.

If this program ain't "real" enough your more than welcome to go root for one of the TRUE ones. One game don't define any team IMO.

GO VOLS!!!
