This is true...just means you need two games to get an idea on this team...not just one game and the sky is falling!

I firmly believe we won't see another effort like we did last night. The players and staff need to turn the page, wash their hands of it, and move on, which I believe they will do. We put that type of performance on the field next Saturday I'll hike that number up to a 4.

1. You've got 18-22 year old kids that have heard nothing but "Battle at Bristol" for a year. They, and IMO the coaches overlooked App State. Super vanilla play calling. I think (pray) we open up the playbook and let the hounds hunt the rest of the year.

We haven't seen a Butch coached team play like that since he's been here. Being the season opener, I'm a little concerned just because we only have one game to base that off of and so much is left unknown. Hopefully it was a one-time fluke. I'd rather a reality check in this game than to lay an egg in front of the biggest crowd ever.

Butch actually admitted that we lost the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
To do that against a smaller, less talented team = very concerned

4. Very few qualities showed last night. Its been easy to hide behind youth the last few yrs, but the o line has been an issue since Butch arrived. What used to be a strength w doolittle turned into the glaring weakness a yr after his departure w the same players. Additionally, Dobbs, as good a kid as he is, is a liability throwing the ball. Hes progressed nada. He was abso dreadful last night!

I like Butch, but i see him as a sales guy in a ceo role. I hope im wrong.

2. I learned a long time ago from a family member who coached in the SEC for many years that you NEVER judge a team on the first game of the season good or bad. Granted last night was UGLY. No one has said much about our lack of tackling and causes me pause as much as anything.

Anybody remember a game many years back (15-20 years) when we opened against Syracuse (we squeaked by Syracuse 35-34) and had to beat the gators in overtime and had a miracle to beat Arkansas????

In the Syracuse game......starter QB Tee Martin went only 9-of-26 for 143 yards


I'm pretty sure we won the national championship that year.........

Don't get me wrong............. I HATED last night's game, as did all of VN.

That was the first game in 1998. Tee picked up a huge fourth down on a run to get Tennessee to overtime.

Here, I suppose I'd be less worried that Stanford was less year when they lost to Northwestern to start the season, then went 11-1 to finish. This week and Florida will tell us way more about how the season will go than last night.

A little concerned realistically. UT has the talent and the tools to win. But lots of concern for IF the Vols underachieve. That would hurt the program tremendously imo.

Oh, and by the way, the same Tee Martin that went 9-26 for 143 yards that night set a then NCAA record for highest completion percentage in a game seven weeks later going 25-26 in a win against South Carolina.
