Do we not have the talent that Fl and Tx has? I see our hs on tv all the time. We should be able to get some of the home grown talent.

Why no volume? Do we not have the facilities? Do our coaches not develop the players? We should be able to have in state studs and get them to knoxville.

No, but a lot has to do with population:

TN - 6.4 million people
FL - 19 million
TX - 25.6 million

I have seen some TN teams on ESPN. I saw an Ensworth game recently.

Ok. now i see why we have the biggest recruiting budget. Still we used to get them in. There has to be a reason we don't now.

We have 45 players on our roster who played high school ball in TN. That is not too bad considering the population, but UT needs to supplement with players from FL, GA, CA, and SC as necessary for key roles. Hopefully, having A&M in the conference will provide more opportunities to recruit from TX. I would be happy to have UT pay me to watch some football in TX. I am out there every Friday night anyway.

Re-emergence of Alabama in the last 10 years. South Carolina on the upswing. Clemson is improved. Virginia Tech is closing off. Miami, Florida State, and Florida will get first dibs in that state. Texas and TA&M are playing well. I think that is why recruiting is getting tougher. Those are all places that we have been able to poach players from.

The reason is actually pretty obvious. When UT came to such high national prominance, other power programs with better recruiting bases were down or in transition. We were able to cherry pick La and Ga mainly and still pick up the excess from Fl. That is how we used to be much better. Tn rarely produces enough talent to support just the university of memphis

How much homegrown talent does Nebraska and Oklahoma have?

Oklahoma has a decent amount but supplements it with guys from Texas. Nebraska has to recruit a lot of guys from Texas as well but Nebraska has a decent amount of in-state talent.

Winning will get recruits attention. Until we start winning some big games, we'll lose the highly regarded recruits to Bama, LSU, Florida, and Georgia, etc. We just saw that with Derrick Henry choosing Bama over UT even though he may be buried in the depth chart. That's why you see five of those SEC teams ranked in the top eight in Rivals at this time.

Jalen Ramsey is a stud. Jordan Wilkens is another good RB and Cornelius Elder looks pretty good too. You have some talent but you need to lock down the state

When we played Wyoming in Nashville, there was an article that said that there was one D-1 recruit per every 500,000 people. They were making a point about how hard Wyoming had to recruit as they only have approximately 1.5 million people in the state.

So there are only three division one recruits in the entire state of Wyoming?

Part of the problem is lack of numbers of good homegrown prospects. The bigger part of the problem is losing guys like Max Staver and Jalen Ramsey to Florida. USCe has been successful under Sourrier bc he has managed to hang on to every big recruit in state.

One of the biggest problems is the governing body of Tennessee HS sports the TSSAA. They still insist on these long dead periods on each sport where you cannot practice or workout as a team. Every state that borders Tennessee has done away with this.., IMO this is the biggest hurdle in HS player development.
